Benn Catches Fire, Eagles Clinch

Jazz Benn sets a new scoring career-high with 27 points as other results give Biola a PacWest tournament berth.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The good news that came to Biola Women's Basketball on Saturday wasn't in the form of a win, but it was still exciting nonetheless.

Junior Jazz Benn exploded for a career-high 27 points and also led her team in rebounds in the 72-60 loss to No. 5/7 Hawaii Pacific. And the Eagles got another boost with Academy of Art and Point Loma both losing at home on Saturday. As a result of those losses, the Biola Eagles have clinched a berth in their first PacWest Tournament coming this March  in Azusa and are also a game ahead of the No. 5 seed Point Loma by a full game with three contests remaining.

Hawaii Pacific jumped out to the early lead with 25 points in the first quarter on 10-for-15 shooting, but so did Benn, as the forward scored seven of her team's 13 first-quarter points.

The Sharks kept their lead in double figures for the majority of the second quarter thanks to 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. But a late three-pointer from Benn kept the game from getting away from Biola before the halftime break.

Benn also ended up scoring the final seven points of the second quarter for Biola and led all players with 14 first-half points.

Biola's offense then gor sharper in the second half, with Tatum Brimley adding seven second-half points on her way to 10 for the game and Aysia Johnson and Stephanie Lee combining for 10 points on 40 percent shooting.

But it just ended up being a special individual night for Benn on the offensive side of the floor. The Oak Park-native shot 4-of-6 in the second half, including 3-for-4 from three point range, to beat her previous career-high of 25 set at Concordia last year. Ten of those points came on perfect shooting in the third quarter, the period during which Biola was able to outscore HPU, 19-16.

"We appreciate the opportunity to play a team like Hawaii Pacific; they are ranked No. 5/7 for good reason," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "They play at a high level at both ends the whole game, and we need to bring our best to compete with them.

"Unfortunately we got off to a slow start, but the high character of the young women we have in this program showed. Despite falling behind early we did a good job of coming back, and competing, for 40 minutes. We had excellent player leadership, and everyone really played together."

As for Brimley, her 10 points keeps her on good pace to join the 1,000 point club this season, especially now that the Eagles are guaranteed an additional game in the PacWest tournament. The senior guard is 50 points away from reaching that milestone while Benn is within 150 points after her 39 minutes on Saturday night gave her 859 career points.

Both women will also have surpassed 2,500 career minutes by the end of the regular season.

Biola will have a week to prepare for its next home game. The Eagles will host the Holy Names Hawks on February 22 at 12 noon.
