Kudos All Around

Four Eagles score in double figures and Biola makes 12 three-pointers in a 87-57 rout of Hawaii Hilo.

HILO, Hawaii --- The list of positive from Monday's game at University of Hawaii at Hilo just kept getting longer and longer for Biola Women's Basketball as the night progressed.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group started the game with their best offensive quarter of the season (28 points) and had six women with five points or more at halftime. The Eagles also sank 12 three-pointers and produced their highest scoring total of the season by game's end with 87 points.

But the biggest positives came in the win column: Biola Women's Basketball earned its first win all-time in Hilo and moved into second place in the PacWest with a 6-2 conference record. The Eagles finish their Hawaii road trip with a 2-1 record while Point Loma dropped to third place in the PacWest after losing its first two games in Hawaii.

"This team is very tight and unified; they are really looking out for each other and are eager to get better," said Coach Nakamura. "That unity really showed through our teamwork at both ends of the floor. It's a blessing to be part of this team!"

Two more great words to describe Biola's work on offense during Monday's game are smart and sharp. The Eagles earned assists on 21 of their 30 made field goals and posted their best shooting percentage of the season at an even 60 percent.

Four Eagles scored in double figures as a result, and two women, Jazz Benn and Aysia Johnson, each threatened to post triple-doubles at various points during the game. Johnson seemed like the best bet early on, as she recorded five points, six rebounds and three assists in the first quarter alone.

The sophomore finished with eight boards, six on the offensive glass, and set a new career-high with 16 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field.

But Benn took over as the triple-double candidate in the second half after she posted six dimes over the first 20 minutes. The All-PacWest forward added two more assists and five rebounds in the second half to finish just short of the triple-double with 13 points, nine boards and eight assists. The eight assists was also a new career-best.

The rest of the starting lineup also had at least five points each, led by Tatum Brimley and Jelissa Puckett's second-half effort to combine for 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting after halftime.

And the trio of Mikayla Greens, Stephanie Lee and Kayla Macedo combined for 24 points off the bench in the first half, setting the table for Lee and Macedo to finish the game as Biola's other two double-digit scorers.

Macedo fell one point short of the career-high she set two days prior with 13 points. Lee converted a four-point play and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to come up with 12 points.

The win is Biola's fifth by 25 points or more this season and set a new NCAA-Era program record for points in a game. The Eagles had previously scored 86 in a win against La Sierra on November 17, 2018.

Nakamura's group catch a plane back to California on Tuesday and will host the Academy of Art Urban Knights in Chase Gym on Saturday at 1 p.m.
