Slow Start, No Problem

Biola Women’s Basketball overcame a 11-point deficit after the first quarter to roll past Academy of Art, 71-49.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball delivered another impressive performance by the end of Saturday afternoon's meeting with Academy of Art. The Eagles held a team under 50 points for the fifth time this season and drained 13 more three pointers to move to 4-0 all-time against the Urban Knights with a 71-49 win.

But that type of result wasn't immediately apparent at the start as the Urban Knights scored the first 14 points of the game to prove why they came in averaging 73.4 points per contest. Biola found itself down 18-7 after the first quarter but quickly shook off any jet lag that may have lingered from its flight back from Hawaii and built a nine-point lead headed into halftime.

"We were not surprise to see ART U score like that at the start of the game. They are a very talented and athletic team and Coach Evans has them playing very hard," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "I am thankful for how coachable our team is and how they stuck together despite a big deficit."

In the 10 minutes between the Urban Knights' 16-2 lead with 2:50 left in the first quarter and the mark at 2:50 before halftime, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group went on a 25-4 run that put the Eagles in control of the contest. Six different women contributed to Biola's nine field goals in the 19 attempts over the stretch and the Eagles made great use of that momentum to put the game away.

The home team never saw its lead drop below seven points for the rest of the contest and held Academy of Art to eight points in the second and eight points in the third quarter.

In the meantime, the Eagles tied their NCAA-Era record for points in a quarter with 28 in the second and immediately followed it up with 26 in the third. The starting lineup really did their damage in those middle period on the way to four of those women finishing in double figures.

Jazz Benn and Aysia Johnson combined for 15 of their 26 points to turn the game around for Biola, while Tatum Brimley swished both of her three-point attempts in the third period to carry her to 10 points for the sixth time in the past eight games.

Danita Estorga offered consistent production in each half to finish with 10 points and seven rebounds and Aysia Johnson had another monster effort at both ends of the floor to end the week averaging a double-double across Biola's two contests. In just 25 minutes, the sophomore guard tied for the team-lead with 13 points and also picked up 13 boards, five on the offensive glass, to total 14.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds since Tuesday.

The trio of Mikayla Greens (five points), Stephanie Lee (nine) and Kayla Macedo (nine) provided the scoring spark off the bench yet again with a total of 23 points. And Biola set another new season-high with 52 rebounds as a team in their seventh PacWest win.

The Eagles remain in second place in the conference headed into a big week of road contests. They'll travel to Concordia on Thursday night before going to Azusa on Saturday for their first Cornerstone Cup matchup of the season with Azusa Pacific.
