Shooting Stalls Midway Through

Defense kept Biola Women’s Basketball in the game, but too many misses led to a loss at Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball played the type of tough defense a team needs to match a formidable opponent. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group face Concordia University Irvine on the road on Thursday night and held the home team to 37 percent shooting and under 20 points in all four quarters during the contest.

But Biola's shooting slowed after draining five three-pointers in the first quarter and the Eagles in red and black couldn't get enough shots to fall in this one, losing 63-57.

After the first quarter, it appeared as though Biola was on track for another 70-plus point game. Senior Tatum Brimley quickly amassed her team's first eight points of the game with a layup and two threes while three other Eagles also got one to fall from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes. Among those women was fellow senior Kayla Macedo who, like Brimley, was playing her 100th game in a Biola uniform on Thursday and drained her first shot attempt of the night.

The 5-for-11 mark from beyond the arc gave the Eagles a 19-11 lead over the home team going into the second quarter. Then the starters scored all of Biola's 10 second-quarter points to maintain a two-point lead for Nakamura's group headed into halftime.

And by the time the game ended, Biola had limited Concordia to just two women who made three-pointers on the night while forcing CUI into 15 turnovers. Despite falling behind by as many as six with three minutes left in the third quarter, three-straight layups by Mikayla Greens and a three-pointer from Jelissa Puckett with 44 seconds left that careened high above the rim and through the hoop tied the game at 44-44 headed into the final 10 minutes.

Greens ended as Biola's second-leading scorer with 12 points off the bench, five behind Brimley's 17 on Thursday. But the characteristically strong three-point shooting Biola team lost a facet of their offense with 2-for-18 shooting from beyond the arc over the final 30 minutes that made it an uphill game for the visiting team.

The starting lineup was still able to produce with high-volume shooting: Jazz Benn chipped in nine alongside Aysia Johnson's seven and Puckett's seven. And that trio also combined for 25 rebounds led by Johnson's 10.

But now the Eagles will turn their attention to their bounce-back opportunity coming this Saturday. Biola travels to Azusa Pacific to take on the Cougars in a Cornerstone Cup matchup beginning at 5:15 p.m.
