UCSD Prevails At Home

Biola was unable to break No. 3 UC San Diego’s three year unbeaten streak at home.

SAN DIEGO --- Coming into the 2019 season it was the unanimous opinion in the West that No. 3 UC San Diego was the team to beat in the Region. Part of that respect was due to the Tritons run to the West Regional Title and National Semifinals last year. But another significant part is due to UC San Diego's three year unbeaten streak at the Triton Soccer Stadium that continued on Saturday against Biola.

The Eagles did the work to create their share of scoring chances on the road and played on even ground with UCSD for the middle portions of the match. But the Tritons created two open chances that resulted in a goal in each half to take their second win of the season.

UC San Diego got on the board early with a goal on its first shot three minutes into the match. Biola would only allow one additional shot on goal over the next 20 minutes while Jessica Penner and Colie Martin forced the Tritons keeper to make two saves. But UCSD would not break in the first half and limited the Eagles to four total shots.

Senior Christina Rodriguez also played quite well in the first half despite the early goal with five saves and a big goal-line stand to right before halftime that kept it a one-goal match. Rodriguez would be followed by Briana Ruelas in the second half and Ruelas made three good saves herself outside of the header that netted the Tritons' second goal in the 65th minute.

Biola's best chance to equalize came in the 53rd minute when Head Coach Erin Brunelle's forward intercepted a pass from the Tritons' backline. Sarah Yang and Mason Stansberry broke back toward the top left corner of the penalty area with only one opponent there to defend them and took shots in succession that got the visiting team's fans on their feet.

After Yang's blast was blocked by the right back, Stansberry chased the rebound down and shot at the left post with a short angle. But the UCSD keeper cut the angle off to keep the ball out of goal and sent it out of bounds.

Five of Biola's seven shots were on target during the match and all five were made by different Eagles.

Coach Brunelle's group will continue its challenging preseason with more road matches next week. Biola heads to Seattle next week to face Seattle Pacific on Thursday at 4 p.m.
