Falcons Hold Home FIeld

After Biola defeated Seattle Pacific at home in 2018, the Falcons returned the favor with their own 1-0 win Thursday.

SEATTLE --- The Biola Eagles held up to their end of a home-and-home agreement with the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Thursday, facing SPU on their home pitch after the Falcons came to Al Barbour Field last September.

Despite the 14-year gap between this visit and Biola's last trip to Seattle, the match concluded with a familiar feel. Both sides played gritty defense throughout and an early goal delivered a victory for the home team just as it did in these teams' 2018 meeting. Unfortunately, that meant the Eagles got the short end of the result this time around, falling 1-0 in the Falcons' home opener.

Seattle Pacific improves to 17-0-2 in home openers over the last 19 years with the win and got the go ahead goal in the 28th minute on a penalty kick.

The home team raced ahead early by holding a large portion of possession in the attacking third and going into halftime with a 10-to-3 advantage in overall shots. But the Eagles did have more shots on goal (3) headed into the break and really rallied in the second half to put SPU on its heels. While keeper Christina Rodriguez followed Briana Ruelas' first-half save with five of her own in the second period, the Eagles pushed forward with dangerous chances in the last 10 minutes.

Colie Martin started the flurry of attacks with a run down the left sideline that Annmarie Alvarez turned into a corner right after the clock elapsed past 80 minutes. Then a few plays later Alvarez sent a ball into the box that was cleared by SPU. But it ended up at the feet of Madi Reeves, who took a shot from deep that just sailed over the crossbar for Biola's cleanest strike at the opposing goal.

Then Biola sent the ball within the vicinity of the six-yard box with a dead-ball service and a cornerkick from Martin, but the SPU keeper pounced on the ball both times to end the threat and eventually earn the clean sheet.

The Eagles will take a short plane ride to Portland, Oregon for their next fixture. Biola will match up with Concordia Portland on Saturday at 1 p.m.
