In It To Win It

Biola does not quit when down 2-1, coming from behind to set down UCSD in five.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- The sweet taste of victory comes on day two of the 2019 Biola Volleyball season as Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's Eagles come back from down 2-1 to dismiss the UC San Diego Tritons in five sets (25-18; 17-25; 20-25; 26-24; 15-10).

"That was a phenomenal team effort," said Seltzer. "It's good to get your first win against a solid team like that which we expect to be a good tea this year. We got a lot better today. We were a little more patient. A little more consistent and it paid off."

For the first time this season the Eagles took control with a first-set victory. It was a convincing one, too, as BU used an eight-point run to stake a 13-7 lead and then followed it up with another long run (six points) just a few rallies later.

Sabrina Winslow was instrumental in that first run, earning three kills in the eight-point stretch. Freshman Abigail Copeland was the star in run number two, getting four kills in the six-point stretch.

Biola had 16 kills and hit .196 in the first set. The 16 kills was a new season-best for a single set.

Sets two and three fell by the wayside and had Biola staring at a 2-1 deficit for the third time in as many matches. In both fourth sets yesterday BU had late leads looking to push to five games but fizzled out down the stretch.

Things looked dicey for a moment in Saturday's fourth set as well, but ultimately Seltzer's squad found just what they needed to finally get over that hump. Biola went down 5-2 early in the fourth set, took their first lead at 8-7 and regained a lead later at 13-12. They would not trail again in the set, but did squander four chances at set point to allow UCSD to tie things up at 24-24.

Finally, facing set point attempt five after a UCSD service error, redshirt freshman Marissa Price stepped up with a huge ace to lock down the set, 26-24.

Having finally unlocked the fifth set in 2019, the Eagles did not for once look like they were just happy to be there. They were out for blood. With Sami Hover serving the Eagles captured the first four points of the decisive set.

A quick burst from UCSD brought it back within one and then it remained within 1-3 points for the remainder of the set. Biola won the points when it mattered most though, scoring three straight to end the match in the Eagles' favor.

Two freshmen kills (Madison Beebe, Raegan Tjepkema) and an ace from Sami Hover made it possible for BU to scratch one tally in their win column. The Eagles had seven aces on the day, led by two from Becca Branch.

Sabrina Winslow and Bekah Roth led the attacking effort in terms of volume with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Vanessa Garcia snuck her name on the tally sheet with four perfectly timed setter dumps, hitting .500 in the match. She added 41 assists for a new season-best total, playing nearly the entire match. She had her second-straight double-double with 14 digs.

Hover anchored the defense as well as ever with 27 digs. She's averaging 6.2 digs-per-set over the last two matches.

"Sami has been absolutely incredible. She carried us. We're getting a lot of looks because of her," said Seltzer.

Tjepkema played a vital role for BU, leading the team with eight blocks, adding eight kills, serving an ace and also digging five balls. The freshman was second on the team in total points with 13.5.

The win propels Biola to 1-2 on the season and has them looking forward to Saturday's nightcap vs. Concord (0-3). The match is slated for a 6 p.m. PT opening serve.
