Game Recap: Volleyball |

An Unblemished Day

Biola completes its 2-0 day two at Alaska Anchorage.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- It was a day of redemption for Biola Volleyball as it brought its season record back to even on Saturday. Following up its morning win over UC San Diego, the Eagles brought out all the stops in their evening matchup and defeated Concord, 3-1 (25-17; 20-25; 25-12; 25-14).

Aside from the quick blip in the second set the Eagles dominated the Mountain Lions in what was undoubtedly their best showing of the tournament up in Alaska. The Eagles recorded a .259 attack percentage for the match, and especially caught fire in the last two frames, recording 28 kills and hitting close to .400.

Biola used a six-point run in the middle of set one to take an 17-10 advantage that would see them through the end of the game and get them out to a quick start. They also won six of the final eight rallies and ended the set with a service ace by Raegan Tjepkema.

The ace was Biola's biggest weapon in this one, recording 12 total service aces. That's tied for Biola's best single-match total since back in 2016. Tjepkema accounted for four of those aces, but it was setter Vanessa Garcia who led the way with a career-high six aces herself. The Eagles were just as good on the reception side as they were serving, only surrendering one ace to Concord.

After a surprising loss in the second set the Eagles bounced back with dominant efforts in the third and fourth to lock up the win. They very nearly held the Mountain Lions to single digits in the third set, leading 23-9 before ultimately using a huge smash by Sabrina Winslow to lock up the 25-12 win.

Winslow very nearly went 4-for-4 in terms of leading Biola in kills this weekend. She had 13 in this one to bring her weekend tally up to 55. The only player to beat her in this final match was Tjepkema who had a season-best 14. Tjepkema was one of BU's most consistent attackers on this opening weekend. She got off to a dandy start to her collegiate career with 36 kills on a .289 percentage.

The fourth set was all Eagles from the outset as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead. They would lead by as many as 12 at points throughout the set before the match came to a close with a Tjepkema kill setup by Garcia.

Garcia was stellar once again, accumulating 42 assists to grab her third-straight double-double (11 digs). Sami Hover, who was named to UAA's All-Tournament team, had 22 digs to bring her weekend total to an eye-popping 90. She's up to 1,089 career digs.

Bekah Roth (11) and Madison Beebe (10) brought Biola up to four players with double-digit kills. Roth was as efficient as all but Tjepkema with her .368 hitting percentage. It was her most effective offensive output of the week.

Biola improves to 2-2 while Concord drops to 0-4 following a tough opening week. Next up for the Eagles is next weekend's NCAA Division II West Region Showcase. Biola will face stiff competition in Alaska Anchorage (2-1), CSU San Bernardino (3-0), Simon Fraser (2-2) and CSU San Marcos (5-0) in a tournament hosted by CSUSB.
