Golden Eagles Turn Tables

Biola’s early lead at home disappeared in the second half with two quick goals from Cal State LA.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the sixth-straight time in their eight all-time meetings, Cal State LA and the Biola Eagles played a tight match that resulted in a one-goal difference. The teams are now even at four wins apiece in their 25-year history facing each other after Cal State LA used used two second-half goals to win 2-1 on the road.

Biola starts the season 0-1 and the Golden Eagles move to 1-0 with Concordia Irvine and Point Loma ahead of them in their next two matches.

The Eagles did a great job in the first half of keeping the visiting Golden Eagles in check. Biola held over 60 percent of possession and had a 5-to-3 advantage in shots. Three freshmen, Christine Goodman, Madi Reeves and Mason Stansberry, really leveraged the opportunity to start their first collegiate match and created a reliable attacking lane down the right sideline for Biola during that first 45 minutes.

Stansberry took the Eagles' first two shots of the match and combined with her teammates quite well to continue to create the chances that would eventually be cashed in by defender Colie Martin. The senior made the most noise in attack for her team during the opener, scoring a fortunate goal on a corner kick before launching the ball at the woodwork for Biola's best chance at a second goal.

Martin ended up giving the Eagles the lead 27 minutes into the match when her service on the corner glanced off the gloves of the Cal State LA keeper in a crash of bodies and crossed the goal line. While that goal was more surprising than anything else, Martin brought the excitement with another shot 10 minutes later, taking the open space above the penalty area and arcing the ball over the outstretched goalkeeper. Unfortunately for Biola, it hit flush against the crossbar, bounced back and prevented the home team from getting the second goal it turned out they needed.

Cal State LA would equalize the match in the first minute of the second half with a run down the right sideline and a cross in front of goal. Then the Golden Eagles took the lead 10 minutes later behind midfielder Paulina Chaidez, who found a small window to shoot in while being challenged by a defender.

Biola was not able to produce any additional shots-on-goal after falling behind and will need to wait until September 21 for its next chance to get a win at Al Barbour Field. Until then, the Eagles start a stretch of road games. Up first is No.3 UC San Diego this Saturday at 4 p.m.
