Game Recap: Volleyball |

We Were Red-dy

Biola improves to 3-0 this season in red unis with a dominant 3-0 win.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball played what was undoubtedly its best match of the season on Saturday afternoon, making the most of its Northern California trip and PacWest opening weekend.

The Eagles spent all of three total rallies trailing throughout the entirety of the match and smashed its previous season-best with a .363 team hitting percentage. Biola out-killed the Urban Knights by 15, had a better hitting percentage by over 200 points, and it also led in aces, blocks and digs.

In fact, the Eagles' back row was doing such good work throughout the match that BU nearly doubled up ART U in that last category (61-37). The 61-dig effort is 14 better than BU's previous season-best for a three-set match.

The hard work on getting balls up made for a very frustrating day for the ART U hitters and made it especially noticeable that the match was never really in doubt.

It was a big 180 turn from last night's match at Holy Names, which had several dicey moments scattered throughout. Strong middle-of-the-set runs were critical for Biola on this day as ART U consistently found ways to play more competitive, almost side out-volleyball at the end of each game.

In the first set, the long run came right at the 15-point marker as the Eagles used six wins in a row to turn a competitive 14-12 game into a very comfortable 20-12 lead. The second set's run was a little bit earlier and helped Biola turn around from one of those rare Urban Knight advantages. The Eagles were locked in a 9-9 battle in the second when a run of five helped carve out the breathing room Seltzer's squad needed to succeed. Freshmen were key in that run as Abigail Copeland had a kill and block and a Madison Beebe kill capped it at 14-9.

The last set was once again close at the outset before Biola took advantage of a bunch of ART U mishits to charge ahead 15-10. That stretch was part of a longer streak of good play that saw BU win 11 of 13 rallies and surge to a 21-12 advantage.

Parlaying off the solid defensive effort, Biola's offense hummed along quite nicely on this day, even hitting above .400 in both the first and third games. Sabrina Winslow again led the team with 11 kills on a good clip, but it was Raegan Tjepkema and Beebe who looked especially good and most consistent.

Tjepkema would finish her day with eight kills while hitting .429 and peppering in a few blocks. Beebe was the one who ended the second set with a kill. She had six total on just nine swings and played error-free volleyball with her attacks.

Abby Brewster and Vanessa Garcia each had 20 assists to keep the offense free flowing. Brewster's were part of a double-double with 13 digs. She also had six kills.

It was another total team effort, with Bekah Roth looking dangerous all day and ending with nine kills on a .300 clip.

The win lifts Biola back to .500 on the season at 5-5 overall. It's a 2-0 start to conference play. Notably, the Eagles added to a new streak that has them 3-0 this season in games they've worn their red, short-sleeve uniforms.

Up next is the week BU finally gets to play inside of Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles travel to Fresno Pacific on Wednesday before hosting Concordia Irvine on Saturday.
