Getting It Done Quickly

Biola takes just over one hour to hand Fresno Pacific a 3-0 loss up in Central California.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball churned out its second-consecutive dominant effort to start its week in grand fashion, setting aside Fresno Pacific in straight sets (25-18; 25-10; 25-19). The win is Biola's sixth in a row over the Sunbirds, having never lost to FPU in the NCAA Division II/PacWest era.

The first set was close for a bit, but Biola never once trailed en route to a seven-point advantage at the end of the game. A 6-3 Biola run took the set from 13-10 to 19-13 and helped BU secure its early advantage.

Fresno Pacific actually had its best offensive effort of the night in the first game, hitting over .100 and recording double-digit kills (11). Neither of those marks were achieved in the quicker, not closer, sets two and three.

Biola had double-digit kills in all three games, but got its highest number (14) in the opener. Biola averaged nearly 13 kills-per-set for the match, but the block was equally as effective of a weapon for the Eagles. Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team out-blocked FPU 10-4 in the match. BU had three blocks in game one, headlined by two solo stuffs from freshman Abigail Copeland.

The second set was all Eagles from the outset, with Biola charging out to a double-digit lead in the game before FPU could even get two points on the scoreboard. They led by 10 at 11-1, 12-2, 13-3 and used a short run after that 13-3 point to extend to its biggest lead of the night (so far) at 16-3.

The largest advantage BU would attain in the run of  the set was 14 points, achieved two times but most notably at the 20-6 mark following a Raegan Tjepkema kill. The 14-point advantage turned to 15 on the final play of the game, making it a 25-10 final that put BU ahead 2-0.

Tjepkema continues to blossom. The freshman middle blocker ended her night second on the team with nine kills, but what was most impressive was her efficiency. Her nine big hits came on just 13 total swings. For the third time this season she managed to log just one attack error, setting a career-high of .615 hitting percentage. She's up over .300 for the season now (.306).

"We've been crushing it so far and absolutely killed it tonight," said Tjepkema. "I can't wait for our first home game Saturday! SUPER STOKED!"

Set three was the first time Biola trailed for any extended amount of time. FPU got off to a strong start to take a 5-2 advantage. That would eventually fade away with Biola tying things up at 9-9 and soon pulling away to a 13-9 advantage thanks to a Sabrina Winslow swing.

Biola would keep FPU at a healthy distance for the remainder of the set and eventually roll to an easy 25-19 set win to clinch the match. Throughout the night BU's performance even had the Fresno Pacific announcer gushing at how solid the team looked.

It was another one of Biola's best team performances of the young year. Winslow again led the team in kills with 10. It's the eighth double-digit kill effort of her 2019 season and her 38th of her three-year Biola career.

Abigail Copeland had one of the best matches of her young Biola career. She was just behind Tjepkema and Winslow with seven kills of her own (tying a season-high) and hit .538 to set a new high-mark for her career. In addition, she led the Eagles with five blocks.

Sami Hover (15), Becca Branch (13) and Vanessa Garcia (10) all hit double-digit in the digs column. For Garcia, her 19 assists and 10 digs made for her fifth double-double of the season. It was her first such effort since she had 28 and 12 vs. Alaska Anchorage back on Sept. 13.

The win helps Biola stay perfect in PacWest Conference play. The Eagles are now 6-5 overall and 3-0 in conference. For FPU, their tough season continues as they drop to 2-10 (1-2 PacWest).

Next up for Biola is its home opener this Saturday. It's also the first home PacWest Conference competition for any sport at Biola since being accepted as full NCAA Division II members. We are going to be giving away a bunch of NCAA swag, free food and more. First serve is at 7 p.m. inside of Chase Gym. Please wear red.
