Garcia Ends On Top

Senior David Garcia wins his doubles and singles contests during his final home match at the Biola Tennis Center.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Day for Biola Men's Tennis was quite a ride. The Eagles took the time to celebrate their only senior in David Garcia before the match and immediately got to work against a formidable former conference peer in Arizona Christian.

The Firestorm came into the match with a 15-1 record on the season at the NAIA level and found themselves down 3-0 in the dual match after Garcia helped the Eagles grab the doubles point and won his 10th singles match of the year by a score of 7-5, 6-3. That won the Eagles some satisfaction on their final regular season match of the year, but Arizona Christian worked a great comeback in singles to take the dual by a 4-3 score.

Coming off a big win at Westmont earlier in the week, the Eagles still proved sharp in doubles at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to take the first point of the match. Head Coach David Goodman mixed his doubles lineup a bit and it worked very well, as the teams of Edwyn Ramos/Erik Martinez and Derek James/David Garcia each took their sets by a score of 6-3.

The mometum continued to singles for Biola, as the Eagles took the first set on five courts and eventually took the 3-0 lead. Playing at the No. 3 spot for the second time this season. Logan Blair made quick work of his opponent for his eighth singles win at home by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Headed into the PacWest tournament, Blair is and undefeated 4-0 with two unfinished matches in singles since March 27.

Then Garcia followed shortly thereafter with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court No. 6 that made him the third Eagles to win 10 singles matches this season (Blair and Derek James). And with wins in both singles and doubles, Garcia becomes the first Eagle this season to win 10 singles and 10 doubles matches. Saturday was the sixth time the season that Garcia has won both his doubles and singles matchups in a dual match.

Unfortunately for Biola, the Firestorm rallied to earn four three-set victories in singles for the comeback win. Derek James, Quentin Lau and Edwyn Ramos were all able to take their first set but were denied either of the next two. Andres Meneses won his second set 6-3 before losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The Eagles will head to Arizona next week for the PacWest Championships. More information on their first match will be available later at athletics.biola.edu.
