Hoping To Bounce Back Friday

Biola Men’s Tennis will look to win its first consolation match Friday after losing to Hawaii Hilo in the PacWest Quarterfinals.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- Biola Men's Tennis opened up its time at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club in the PacWest Tennis Championships on Thursday morning, dropping its quarterfinal match to No. 2 seed Hawaii Hilo by a score of 4-0.

The Vulcans came into the match ranked No. 17 in NCAA DII Men's Tennis and quickly jumped out to the initial 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Having faced UH Hilo at the Biola Tennis Center on March 25, the Eagles knew what to expect going into singles. But they were unable to crack the Vulcans' top players as straight-set victories on courts one, three and four sealed the win for the higher seed.

Hawaii Hilo took the first set on all six singles courts, but Logan Blair, David Garcia and Ian Nieh were all able to walk off with unfinished matches thanks to their ability to push their opponents to long games in the second set.

The loss puts the Eagles in the consolation bracket, where they are likely to face Point Loma as the Sea Lions were losing 3-1 to No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific at time of writing. Biola played the Sea Lions extremely close in two meetings this season, as was just a few good turns of forture away from taking a win in both meetings.

Derek James went 2-0 against his PLNU counterpart at No. 3 singles, Tim Soderman, while Logan Blair also earned a win at No. 2 singles at Point Loma and has played very well this season against Yuki Okamoto. Point Loma won the doubles point against Azusa Pacific on Thursday and pushed three singles matches to three sets. It just remains to be seen if the Sea Lions emptied the tanks against the Cougars and will be vulnerable for an upset on Friday.

Biola's match against Point Loma is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday.
