What A Relief

The success from Biola’s relief pitchers helped the Eagles draw close in game one and hold onto game two against Academy of Art.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles continued their four-game series with Academy of Art on Friday, hosting a doubleheader that was split one game apiece.

The Eagles scored eight runs in both contest, winning the second game 8-5 in seven innings to win their 20th game of the year after dropping the first contest 9-8. Head Coach Justin Duarte's group collecte a total of four hits and lived on opportunistic production to score 16 runs; Biola stole nine bases over the course of both games. But BU's relievers also played crucial roles in the doubleheader with a combined 7.1 scoreless innings of work that kept everything together late in the game.

Academy of Art jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after three innings in game, and the Urban Knights needed every run they could get because of Biola's scoring in the middle innings. The Eagles scored seven runs between the fourth and sixth with a lot of two-out production.

After the Urban Knights retired the first two hitters of the bottom of the fourth, RobertAnthony Cruz kicked off a streak of four-straight hits from Biola that scored two runs on an Andrew Buglino double and an Anj Bourgeois single. The Eagles added one more on a throwing error to make it 6-3 in the fourth and scored each of their next four runs with two outs as well.

Senior Jerron Largusa stole three bases all by himself between the fifth and sixth innings and scored twice while Jackson Collins picked up two of his five walks on the day during those frames.

By the end of the sixth, Joey Leavitt had completed his work in relief for Biola, throwing 1.2 innings while allowing just one hit over 21 pitches. Leavitt was followed by three innings from Chris Despars, who had his best appearance of the year with five strikeouts and just two hits. The two relievers' shutdown pitching held the game at 9-7 into the bottom of the ninth, where the Eagles scored a run on a wild pitch and had the tying run in scoring position with one out.

Unfortunately, the Eagles weren't able to provide the ninth-inning lightning two days in a row and stranded Andy Van Antwerp at second to end the game. But that ninth inning did light the fire for the start of the seven-inning contest, as the Eagles scored three in the bottom of the first to take their second lead of the series.

Cruz provided the big blow in the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right that scored Collins for the second run. It was the first of two hits in game two for Cruz, giving him multi-hit games in both parts of the doubleheader. He was joined by the Eagles' catcher in both games, with Buglino knocking a single and double in game one and Caleb Watson lining two singles and driving in two during Biola's win.

After ART U made a 3-2 game in the third, the Eagles pushed right back with four runs in the fourth on Watson's hit and a sacrifice fly from Anj Bourgeois. Starter Larson Knidreich collected one more out after the Eagles went up 7-2 before he exited the game with five strikeouts. Then Josh Ludeman took over for the lefty while the Urban Knights were threatening with 2.2 innings for his third save of the year. Ludeman surrendered just one hit during his appearance and didn't allow opposing runners to advance beyond second base.

The teams will return to Eagles Diamond tomorrow as Biola tries to win the series. The finale is scheduled for a 12 noon start.
