Eagles Take Conference Series

Kenny Carrillo threw seven great innings in the series finale while two homeruns carried Biola to a 7-2 win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Thanks to great pitching, especially from starter Kenny Carrillo, and a few big hits, Biola Baseball won its first home conference series of the year on Saturday with a 7-2 win over Academy of Art.

With 10 walks on the afternoon and four stolen bases, the Eagles only needed five hits to score seven runs and the majority were driven in by massive homeruns from Jerron Largusa and RobertAnthony Cruz. Head Coach Justin Duarte's group improves to 13-5 at home with the win and pulls themselves up to a .500 record in PacWest play at 12-12.

Outside of the homeruns, the big story of the day was Carrillo's start, as the righty went deep into the game for the second-straight week and improved to a team best 5-2 on the year. After allowing a walk with no one out in the first inning, Carrillo established control on the hill by retiring nine Urban Knights in a row with three strikeouts, two groundouts and four flyouts.

Academy of Art was able to briefly tie the game in the fourth, but Carrillo responded by retiring the side on eight pitches in the fifth and concluded his start with a 10-pitch seventh, including three outs on the final three deliveries of the inning, to maintain a quality start with two runs allowed. The junior has lowered his ERA by eight-tenths of a run over the last two outings alone and pushed his strikeouts-to-walk ratio to 28-to-8 with five punchies on Saturday.

Biola's first big blast came off Largusa's bat in the third when he got in front of a fastball and launched it for a no-doubter to left that scored two runs. It was Largusa' sixth homer of the year and the first of three RBI's on the day, giving him at least two RBI's in every series Biola has played in this season and a total of 36 on the year.

Two innings later, RobertAnthony Cruz finally made up for the linedrives that were caught for outs in his first two at-bats by launching a light-tower homerun to center that probably went over 400 feet and opened up the game for Biola at a score of 6-2. The homer tied Cruz with Largusa for most extra-base hits on the team with 16 and gives him a nice three-game hitting streak headed into next week's series with Hawaii Pacific.

The Eagles added one more run in the sixth on a passed ball that scored Tyler Baca, who made the most of the second start of his collegiate career by scoring twice on two walks and a stolen base. Baca was one of three Eagles (Jackson Collins and Joey Magro) to collect multiple walks on the day and Collins now has an even number of strikeouts and walks (19) after walking seven times in the series.

BU then turned to Josh Ludeman for the final two innings to ensure they would take the series. Ludeman made quick work of ART U, retiring all six men he faced on 19 pitches to squelch any chances of late-inning drama.

The Eagles are set to host Hawaii Pacific next week in the final home series of the season that counts toward their PacWest record. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
