Game, Set, Match

Biola Men’s Tennis defeats Saint Katherine 5-0 and combines with the women for a 3-0 record on Friday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles accomplished an unusual feat on Friday by earning their second victory of the day against a second opponent during their afternoon match. After defeating the Willamette Bearcats by a 7-0 scoring earlier in the morning, Head Coach David Goodman's group defeated the Saint Katherine Firebirds 5-0 in their 4 p.m. match.

The Eagles have now won three dual matches in a row and are 5-3 on the year. The men's and women's tennis teams also went 3-0 on the day after the women beat Saint Katherine 4-0.

Biola had a sizeable advantage going into the match because Saint Katherine's travel roster was limited to four players. The Eagles cruised to two easy victories in doubles to take the doubles point and head to singles with a 3-0 lead after the Firebirds surrendered the points at stake at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Logan Blair and Quentin Lau won their second-straight doubles decision at the No. 1 flight and are now even at 3-3 on the year. That win followed a convincing 6-1 result from Derek James and Andres Meneses that gave Meneses his second doubles win in his second doubles competition of the season. Both on the Ecuadorian's doubles matches came on Friday.

"We have improved quite a bit in the doubles and it has been showing in the last few matches we played. We have just been competing better and making the most of our opportunities," said Coach Goodman. "Additionally, Edwyn is really stepping up for us which has been a pleasant surprise at No. 1 singles. He is starting to play some really good tennis and it will help us get to the next level as a team."

Ramos would have won his match at No. 1 singles with his unfinished score of 6-2, 3-0 had not Erik Martinez and David Garcia raced through their straight-set wins to clinch the match for Biola. Martinez is now 2-2 on the year in singles with his 6-0, 6-1 win while Garcia still hasn't lost a singles match in over a month. His 6-0, 6-2 win is his second-straight victory and made him 4-1 in singles this year.

The Eagles have about two days to prepare for their next match. Biola hosts Western New Mexico at 4 p.m. on Monday.
