Fight To The Finish

Big wins in singles help the Eagles tie Western New Mexico at 3-3 before losing a close decision.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There was no give in the Biola men's tennis team on Monday night. Clad in their trusty all-black kits, the Eagles shook off a doubles loss with big first set wins on four courts to give Biola a chance at another home victory.

A series of singles wins gave Head Coach David Goodman's group a brief lead and secured a 3-3 tie while No. 6 singles went into a decisive third set. But Western New Mexico ended Biola's two-match winning streak at home by taking the final singles match and winning the dual match by a score of 4-3.

"I think we're playing at a pretty good level, but at this level the difference between winning and losing is so small. We weren't able to play a complete match and let go of for the guys," said Goodman. "We weren't able to play a complete match, let go of leads in matches and let our opponents back into it. I credit Western New Mexico for how well they played, they are a very good team."

The Eagles bounced back nicely in singles from a loss in doubles that was caused by a narrow 7-5 defeat at the No. 2 fixtures. After watching the Mustangs take the initial 1-0 lead, Andres Meneses took matters into his own hands by tying the dual match at 1-1 with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory.

With a number on Meneses' teammates keeping pace with wins in their respective first sets, it became clear midway through singles play that the Eagles were looking at additional wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to earn the come-from-behind victory and the men on those courts could feel it.

After dropping his serve in the first game of the match, Logan Blair roared back in a big way with a 6-3, 6-0 victory that displayed Blair's superior ground game. The Oregon-native played great angles and attacked the opposing baseline with heavy forehands that put Jaoquin Delpino on his heels and simply got in a dominating groove that Delpino couldn't recover from.

It was the second-straight win at No. 2 singles for Blair and pushes him over .500 at 4-3 in singles play on the year.

Shortly after Blair walked off court two, Derek James wrapped up his 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 to improve to a team-best 5-0 in singles play this season and to grab the Eagles' third point. That put the attention on senior David Garcia's match, and gave the Eagles confidence since Garcia had won a deciding match the week prior at Holy Names.

Unfortunately, Garcia couldn't come up with the third-set magic this time around and the Eagles came up just one point short. Biola will have its chance to get back in the win column when it hosts University of Rochester on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.
