LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The 2018-19 Biola Basketball season was filled with fantastic individual performances and improved team performance, seeing both the men and women's teams finish in a spot where, if eligible, they would have qualified for the PacWest Conference postseason.
The solid seasons now include some individual conference honors for the Eagles' student-athletes, with Trevor Treinen leading the way as an All-PacWest third team selection on the men's side. Both Jazz Benn and Alex Talma were also honored by the conference with All-PacWest honorable mention recognition.
Sophomore Jazz Benn earned All-PacWest honorable mention recognition after leading the Eagles with 12.6 points-per-game. Benn started all 28 games this season and was the only student-athlete on the team to make 100 field goals and average of 30 minutes played per game. She scored in double figures in 14 of the final 16 games of the season, recorded two double-doubles and scored 20 points or more three times this season.
"Jazz is the exact type of person and player we are building our program with," said Head Coach
Alan Nakamura. "She is a coachable, multi-dimensional team-first player on the court, a great teammate on and off the court, a serious student and a blessing to all."
Benn was eighth in the conference, and third among sophomores, in total three-pointers made with 54 She never fell below 10.7 points per game at any point this season. This is Benn's first conference honor and the second PacWest all-conference honor for Biola Women's Basketball. DeMoria White was named All-PacWest first team in 2017-18 for the Eagles.
"We depend on her a great deal," said Nakamura. "Because of her humble spirit she met every challenge and continued to expand her game throughout the season. The future is bright for Jazz and for our basketball program"
On the men's side, Treinen moved up a spot this season after earning All-PacWest honorable mention for his work in the 2017-18 season. The senior became the first Biola Men's Basketball player to land on either the first, second or third team in the PacWest Conference and NCAA Division II era.
Treinen finished the season 12th in the conference in scoring at 14.3 points-per-game. He had four games of 20 or more points and averaged just a tick higher scoring average in PacWest competitions (14.5ppg). He poured in 401 total points to get up over 1,400 in his career.
"Trevor was our best scorer and best playmaker this year," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "His assist-to-turnover ratio was very good. He improved on that greatly from his junior year. He had a great season. There was so many games, especially down the stretch, where he just kind of took over and was the difference in us winning those games."
He started all 28 games this year averaging 34.3 minutes-per-game, and he also led Biola with 87 assists (10th in conference). He limited himself to under 50 turnovers, ending the year second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.9:1.
Treinen had five games this season with double-digit scoring, five or more assists and four or more rebounds, playing an integral role both offensively and defensively all season long.
Talma is rewarded for his excellent three-year career with his first all-conference honors. The big man from New Zealand was the Eagles' second-most important offensive player as the leading scorer among BU big men.
He finished second in the conference in rebounds-per-game with 8.4 on average. Talma helped Biola out-rebound its opponents 34.2 to 31.5 on average. In addition to the rebounding, he was Biola's second-leading scorer overall with an average of 12.2 points-per-game.
"Alex is an excellent rebounder and a fine scorer," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "He's a great person to coach. He improved each year and we will miss him. He had a number of big games this year and a number of our wins would not have happened if Alex were not there."
His scoring was the 17th-best mark in the entire league and he accumulated his 341 total points on 46 percent shooting. He was also top-10 in the conference in free throw shooting and top-5 among big men, making 72 of his 97 attempts from the FT line (.742).
This was Biola's third year off the NCAA Division II transition and should be the school's final year of provisional membership. If word comes down this July that the institution has gained full membership the Eagles will be postseason eligible for the 2019-20 season and be able to participate in next year's PacWest Championship, held at Azusa Pacific.
