Vulcans Ride To Victory

The Hawaii Hilo Vulcans earned a straightforward 4-0 victory at the Biola Tennis Center on Monday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The No. 20 Hawaii Hilo Vulcans came to the Biola Tennis Center on Monday to play the its of five matches in Southern California.

Following an hour delay due to a close women's match preceding the men's contest, the Vulcans got out on the front foot with a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles and never looked back. Hawaii Hilo took the No. 1 doubles fixture by a score of 6-4 and went on to win three straight-set singles decisions to take the dual match, 4-0.

The clinch in doubles by the Vulcans prevented David Garcia and Edwyn Ramos from earning a win at No. 3 doubles. What would have been the duo's seventh win in 11 decisions was left unfinished at 5-4 as the men transitioned to singles play.

Hawaii Hilo took the match with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles. None of the Vulcans at those positions lost more than three games on their way to victory. But the Eagles showed some grit in the matches that were abandoned at the clinch.

Both David Garcia and Andres Meneses won five games apiece in their respective first sets before dropping in 7-5. Derek James lost his first set against Martin Soukal 6-1 but was building back in the second set with a score of 3-2 in his favor.

Due to equipment restrictions, Biola was unable to provide commentary for Monday's match against the Vulcans. But commentary has been scheduled for the Eagles' next home match, which comes this Wednesday against Pacific University (Ore.) beginning at 2 p.m.
