Nothing Earned Comes Easy

Biola rebounds with five singles wins against Pacific University after dropping the doubles point.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles didn't let a few small obstacles shake their motivation to win on Wednesday. Even in spite of starting the dual match down 1-0 and having two singles matches go to three sets, Head Coach David Goodman still pushed its way to a 5-2 victory over Pacific University (Ore.).

The Eagles broke their losing streak against a list of quality opponents by having the NCAA DIII Boxers their third loss in 11 matches this season. The win gives the men's team its seventh victory of the season and brings them even with the seven wins Biola Women's Tennis has.

The Boxers took the initial lead with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles and a few late breaks at No. 3 to also win 6-3. With the teams agreeing to play all the matches out, Logan Blair and Quentin Lau were able to push their doubles contest to a tiebreaker and took 7-5 win in the breaker after winning six of the first seven points.

Blair continued his roll from the tiebreaker into singles by winning his first set 6-0 while four other Eagles took the first set in their singles matches. Edwyn Ramos at No. 1 and David Garcia at No. 6 also zoomed through their first sets and earned straight-set victories.

Ramos continues to excel at the No. 1-flight since construction crews broke ground to build courts seven and eight at the Biola Tennis Center. Ramos has won three of his last four singles matches when playing No. 1 at home over the past 10 days and rolled Sean Murphy in the second set with a strong groundstrokes on the way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

After Garcia got back in the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6, Blair delivered a strong close to his match by winning the final three games of the second set to get Biola's third point of the dual match. Blair's decisive 6-0, 6-4 victory was his eighth singles win of the season and officially eclipses his win total of seven from 2018.

With Quentin Lau dropping his three-set match on court four, the Eagles needed a three-set win from Derek James at No. 3 or Andres Meneses at No. 5 in order to clinch. James gutted out the first set with a 7-5 win before unforced errors led to a 2-6 loss in the second.

As James came out of the between-set break, Meneses rallied to even his match at a set each on five to give Biola an insurance policy for the clincher. But James took care of that all important fourth-point with an excellent cross-court forehand and forehand slice that facilitated a 6-0 victory in the third set. James stayed undefeated at the No. 3 singles position with the win and becomes the first player on the team with 10 singles wins this season.

Meneses sustained the strong finish for Biola with heavy forehand of his own in the third set to break Joey Hu to go up 5-3 before holding serve to take the match. It's the first three-set victory of the year for the Ecuadorian and his third victory at singles.

The Eagles will look for their second win of the week on Friday when they head south to play Saint Katherine at 1:30 p.m.
