Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Comeback Stopped Short

Biola Men’s Tennis has to take a loss in its first match of the season despite coming back from a 2-0 deficit.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles had a few important breaks go against them in their first match of the season. After being match point away from taking the double point in their contest against Hope International, the Eagles fell behind the Royals 2-0 and eventually lost 4-2.

The scores actually do decent justice to the fight and grit Head Coach David Goodman's group put into their comeback effort. After the Royals took the first doubles match of the evening with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 pairing. But the duo of David Garcia and Edwyn Ramos quickly responded with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 doubles match to turn everyone's attention to the deciding No. 2 matchup.

At separate points in the match, Biola's Derek James and Erik Martinez held a 5-2 lead and had a match point at 6-5. For a moment it seemed that the Eagles had taken the doubles play with James and Martinez winning that match point. But Hope International disputed the call and had it overturned by the referee before taking the 7-6 comeback win.

The Eagles found themselves down 2-0 after the start of singles play but still deserve credit for buckling down and handling what was under their control. In quick succession, Logan Blair and James clinched straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to put the Eagles back on even footing with the Royals. And it seemed like Biola might have been able to pull the win out with Andres Meneses winning his second set and Quentin Lau down 6-5 in his second set.

But Hope International was able to close out the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and cause Biola to start its season 0-1. The Eagles hope to rebound on Saturday when they host San Diego Christian beginning at 2 p.m.
