Eagles Flex Their Muscles

Biola gives a glimpse of what it is really capable of with a convincing sweep of San Diego Christian.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After Head Coach David Goodman walked away from the post-match meeting with Biola Men's Tennis he breathed a sigh of satisfaction and said this was the first time during his tenure that Biola did what it had just done.

The Eagles defeated the San Diego Christian Hawks for the first time since 2016, and really for the first time ever in their five-year rivalry with SDCC, with a 4-0 sweep behind some of the best tennis Biola has played. Biola was previously credited with a win via forfeit against San Diego Christian in 2016 but had lost all the other meetings.

"The guys match was extremely exciting. We played some of the best doubles I've seen our team play since I've been coaching here," said Goodman. "Logan Blair and Quentin Lau we're amazing. The last match we played with Hope International we learned a lot from and really made some strong adjustments that helped us in the doubles. It's always exciting to beat a team that you never have; San Diego Christian is always a great team year in and year out and to beat them for the first time is an amazing feeling."

Blair and Lau blitzed to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 to set the tone for the rest of Biola's afternoon and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead headed into singles. San Diego Christian only fielded five men from their roster for Saturday's match, so the Eagles came into the match with a point in hand in singles and only needing one doubles victory to win the doubles decision.

Biola harnessed the hype from the big doubles win and got right to work in singles. The Eagles took the first set in four of the five singles matchups, including big wins from David Garcia, who became the first Eagles to go up one set to none, and Edwyn Ramos, whose 7-5 win in the first set staved off a comeback attempt from Phillip Gleich and cemented Biola's advantage in the contest.

Blair took his first set by a score of 6-4 and just got better as the match went on because he was able to leverage the psychological advantage created by his teammates' success. When Garcia clinched Biola's third point and it became clear that Blair's match was the Eagles' soonest chance at victory, the Sprague, Oregon-native rolled to a 5-2 lead and buckled down to win the match on his serve. Blair came back from 0-30 down in the final game and forced three errors on his way to a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Biola will continue its trend of alternating days of rest and matches. The Eagles are scheduled to host No. 13 Azusa Pacific on Monday afternoon before facing Concordia at the BTC on Wednesday afternoon.
