Extra-Base Hits Galore

Eight on Biola’s runs in its 10-6 win over Hawaii Pacific come via the homerun or double.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- In a game at the plate that was mostly feast or famine, the Eagles did a lot of feasting in their bounceback win over Hawaii Pacific in game one of Monday's doubleheader.

Biola overcame 13 strikeouts with five extra-base hits that drove in eight of their 10 runs in the win and notched its first victory in Hawaii by a score of 10-6. The Sharks suffer their second home loss in 12 games at Hans L'Orange Park while the Eagles get back to .500 at 4-4.

In contrast to the first two games of the series, Head Coach Justin Duarte's group started Monday's nine-inning contest in a 3-0 hole after two innings. But the momentum of the game shifted in a big way when the bottom third of the Eagles' order came up with the first two extra-base hits of the night.

Designated hitter Cole Beemer kicked things off by smashing a triple 390 feet to right center on the second pitch of the third inning. On the next two pitches, Sharks starter Jordan Gessling hit a batter to bring the tying run to the plate and then found himself even at 3-3 when Brandon Cody hit his first homerun of the year over the left field fence. It would be Cody's only hit of the night but it made him one of seven Eagles to get a base knock in the game.

With the top of the order coming to the plate after Cody's roundtripper, Ryan Gallegos drove in his first RBI in nine days with a double that made it 4-3. Starter Dallas Burk took the momentum of his newfound lead and really took control in the third and fourth to give Biola the shutdown innings it needed.

The senior lefty retired the last seven men he faced before deferring to reliever Anthony Villegas for the bottom of the fifth inning. Then Villegas just did what he's been doing as a long reliever to begin the 2019 season, put up zero after zero on the scoreboard. The sophomore earned his second win of the year after starting his outing with three scoreless innings and helping the Eagles hold the four-run lead that was built by a Jerron Largusa homerun and an RJ Bates single.

Biola would need all seven of those runs since Hawaii Pacific got to Villegas for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. But his teammates picked him up at the plate in the ninth by responding with a three-spot of their own to regain the cushion. Bates delivered a big two-run double with the bases loaded for the initial blow before Caleb Watson grabbed his first RBI of the game on a slow ground out.

Josh Ludeman earned his first save of the year by working the final inning and a third without allowing a hit.
