Solid Pitching Not Enough

Biola got a great four-plus innings from Josh Ludeman and Tyler Mead but the offense came up empty.

February 25, 2019

Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Biola pitching held a zero-zero tie with Hawaii Pacific through the first four and a half inning of the series-concluding game Monday. But good performances from Josh Ludeman and Tyler Mead couldn't help the offense as the Eagles lost 4-0 to the Sharks.

The teams were all knotted up at zeroes through four innings and had just two hits apiece until HPU exploited an opening in the fifth inning and scored four runs to take the only lead they needed in the contest. Biola drops to 4-5 heading into the series it has prioritized in the Hawaii trip, a four-game set with Hawaii Hilo that actually counts toward the teams' PacWest records.

The game started well enough for the Eagles as Head Coach Justin Duarte elected to give the ball back to Ludeman after the righty went 1.1 innings for a save in Monday's game one. Ludeman allowed a runner in each frame but was able to get out of both innings without any damage before he handed the ball to Mead.

In the meantime, the Eagles got their first hit of the game in the second inning on a leadoff single up the middle by RobertAnthony Cruz. But Biola was unable to advance a runner beyond second base in the contest against starter Shane Adams, slowing the offense considerably. On the brightside, Cruz now has a four-game hitting streak headed into the series with the Vulcans and started the game 2-for-2 after he doubled in the fourth.

Mead also had a good performance for Biola and it was better than the two earned runs on his stat line indicate. The freshman righty retired the Sharks one through six batters in order in his first two innings of work before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth when HPU scored all its runs.

But it was really the wild pitch that hurt the Eagles in the inning, as two free bases for the Sharks helped them score the first run on a single through the drawn-in infield and set the table for a sacrifice fly to score the second. Biola used four pitchers in the fifth by the inning's end as Hawaii Pacific scored two more times with two-out hits.

Adams would finish off the game for the Sharks to earn the win and the shutout for HPU after Chris Despars stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts while the Eagles were on defense.

The Eagles series with Hawaii Hilo begins with a single game Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. Pacific Time.
