Depth Wins the Day

Biola Men’s Tennis earns a 4-0 sweep of Whittier College with wins on the far courts.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles swept Whittier College 4-0 on Saturday for their second home win of the year behind great play from the lower portion of their ladder.

David Garcia and Derek James combined for three of Biola's four points on the day as the Eagles improve to 2-2 on the season. Whittier College falls to 0-3 on the loss despite tough competition at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights.

Biola took the early lead after the Eagles at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles broke the Poets' serve early in the set. Edwyn Ramos and Ian Nieh raced through their match at the No. 3 flight with a 6-1 victory while Garcia and James finished off their win shortly after with a result of 6-3. Both teams earned their first victories together as doubles pairs as the Eagles improve to .500 in doubles matches this year at 5-5.

Head Coach David Goodman pulled out a trump card by inserting Quentin Lau into the No. 5 position for the first time in 19 days and getting a 6-2, 6-1 victory from Lau for the third point of the dual match. Lau was preceded briefly by Derek James, who took his singles match by the same score and remains the only Eagle who is still undefeated in singles this season. James is 2-0 in his matches that have been finished.

With three points wrapped up, Biola turned to the matches at No. 2 and No. 6 to look for a clincher with Logan Blair up a set and at 5-4 in the second and Garcia up a set and a break in his match. Garcia took his match first by a score of 6-3, 6-4 with everyone crowded around the far No. 6 court in the corner of the BTC to secure the match for Biola.

Blair walked off one game away from finishing his match while Edwyn Ramos was two games away from matching Pim Van Der Veer at a set apiece in the No. 1 fixture.

The Eagles will hold onto their 2-2 record for a few days before facing Concordia on February 28 in La Mirada. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
