Eagles Fall Flat

Biola Men’s Tennis gets shutout despite giving Concordia a run during the singles matches.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis hosted Concordia at the Biola Tennis Center on Thursday to play one more road match before taking a roadtrip to Northern California next week.

The Eagles had to play from behind after dropping two quick doubles decisions and seemed like they could come up with the home upset in the early portion of singles play. But Concordia reversed some of Biola's early leads and took the dual match by a score of 4-0.

After CUI made quick work of doubles play, Head Coach David Goodman's group pushed back early in singles, particularly at the No. 3 and No. 4 courts. Derek James and Andres Meneses both went up a break early in the first set and took three-game leads while David Garcia and David Garcia were also ahead on the far courts.

James rolled to a decisive 6-0 first set win by pushing his opponent left and right on nearly every point and placing the ball in the far corners. But after James' victory the Eagles saw their other advantages slip away while Concordia simultaneously took charge in the No. 1 and No. 2 flights.

Meneses ended up losing his first set 7-5 after seeing a tough decision get called against him on set point at 5-4. Lau wasn't able to stem the resurgence of Thomas Kyle in the first set after being up 4-2. And Logan Blair just couldn't seem to make Yassine Smiej make an unforced erorr in long rally despite how well Blair was pushing his opponent around the court.

Blair gathered himself to hold serve four times in the second set before dropping the match for Concordia's second point. But a 6-0 win in the second set at No. 5 for Concordia put the pressure on James to finish his match before the clinch and salvage a point for Biola. After going down 0-1 in the set and tying it a 3-3, James came up with a clutch rally on the deuce point at 4-4 to bring him within a game of victory.

Unfortunately, Daniel Reddmann rallied back to hold serve in the next game and avoided a loss. Concordia got its fourth and clinching point at No. 1 singles and left the other matches unfinished.

The Eagles are scheduled to travel to Northern California with the women's team next week for two matches. Biola will take on Holy Names on Monday afternoon.
