Eagles Bite First Vs. Rattlers

Scoring the first six runs of the game leads to Biola's first win of 2019.

TUCSON, Ariz. --- Jennifer Morinishi got the call to start in the circle for the first time in her collegiate career and she sure didn't disappoint. The freshman threw a complete game in a 6-4 win over St. Mary's (Texas) to open play at the 2019 Cactus Classic tournament in Tucson.

Wet field conditions caused a delayed start to the day and shuffled up the order of the games a bit, but that did not seem to faze the Eagles at all. Head Coach Nikki Udria's team exploded out of the gates, putting up a five-spot in the second inning against a Rattlers team that won 34 games last year and has won its conference four years in a row.

The big production came when five consecutive batters reached base for the Eagles in the bottom of the second. BU got a few walks and three singles to get the first four runs across the plate. Then Kylie Velasco and Ruth Munoz initiated a double steal of second and home that ended successful on both ends and resulted in a 5-0 Biola lead.

The lead grew to 6-0 in the next inning when Ari Gonzales collected her second hit of the day, and RBI double that drove in Missy Poti and made it 6-0.

Meanwhile, Morinishi managed to keep the Rattlers off the board through their first four offensive chances. She struck out six over those first four innings in establishing Biola's position firmly in the driver's seat.

The Rattlers managed two-run innings in the fifth and seventh but could not overcome the early advantage set by BU. Morinishi got the complete game to improve to 1-0 on the season. Velasco led Biola with two RBI in the game, her second multi-RBI game in three chances this season.

The win moved Biola to 1-0 and dropped St. Mary's to 4-5. Both teams continued play in the tournament quickly with the Eagles hopping right into their next contest against Oklahoma Baptist.
