Cougars Close Out In Singles

No. 13 Azusa Pacific defeated Biola Men’s Tennis 5-0 with a contested doubles victory and strong singles play.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles hosted the No. 13 Azusa Pacific men's tennis team on Monday for the first Cornerstone Cup competition of the spring athletic season.

The match started off tight, with all three doubles matches within a game's margin at 4-3 in the Cougars' favor. But after APU held onto its advantage and took the doubles point the Cougar single players harnessed their momentum and played to a 5-0 victory at the Biola Tennis Center.

After the match, No. 13 APU is now 5-0 on the season while Biola drops to 1-2. Monday's meeting counted for five Cornerstone Cup points since these two teams will meet again in Azusa on Friday March 22, so Azusa Pacific now holds a 55-20 advantage in the Cornerstone Cup standings. The Eagles has a chance to close that gap this Saturday if Biola Swim & Dive can top the Cougars at the PCSC Swimming Championships.

The Eagles started with a good push to begin the match as the tandem of David Garcia and Edwyn Ramos brought the vocal energy and early lead at No. 3 doubles. The other two doubles positions battled back from early breaks of serve by the Cougars to bring the score back to 4-3. But all three Azusa Pacific pairs were able to break serve in crunch time at the end of the set and the Cougars swept the doubles fixtures in a span of five minutes, all by a score of 6-3.

Following a brief break, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead on three singles courts while Biola countered with strong starts from Garcia and Erik Martinez at the No. 6 and No. 5 flights respectively. As Garcia and Martinez were both closing in on set one wins with two-game advantages, it seemed like all the Eagles would need for the comeback victory was resurgent performances from two of the three men at the top of their lineup card.

But APU's top three players made sure they wouldn't lose after going up a set and Cougars won the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 matches in straights to clinch the victory.

With the match settled, the umpire allowed Martinez and his opponent to decide their battle via superbreaker after both men took a set. Martinez fended off two match points after going down 7-1 and then 9-4. But Jesse Haas was able to convert on his third match point and earned APU's fifth point.

It's uncertain when Biola will return to action because the next match on the Eagles' schedule will likely be affected by rain. Both the men's and women's tennis teams were scheduled to host Concordia on Wednesday afternoon. But the forecast will likely force the teams to agree on another date in the near future.
