Seniors Named Scholar All-Region

United Soccer Coaches named four seniors from Biola Women’s Soccer Scholar All-West Region selections.

December 16, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Four seniors from Biola Women's Soccer appeared on the list of Scholar All-West Region selections released by United Soccer Coaches on Monday.

All four women who earned this recognition were also All-PacWest selections for the Eagles. Centerback Madyson Brown earned this distinction for the second time in her career at Biola and appeared on the Scholar All-West Region Second Team. Fellow seniors Alyssa Chavez, Colie Martin and Hali Oakes were aso named Scholar All-West Region and landed on the Third Team.

Biola and Point Loma were the only two teams from the PacWest that were represented on the Scholar All-West Region Teams.

Coaches affiliated with United Soccer Coaches make Scholar All-Region selections for each College Division based on a prestigious combination of success on the pitch and in the classroom. To be up for nomination, the student-athletes must be upperclassmen, maintain a 3.30 GPA, start at least 50 percent of their team's matches and collect playing honors like all-conference selections to demonstrate that they are an elite player.

This is Brown's second All-Region award from United Soccer Coaches this month and adds to a 2019 resume that includes PacWest Defender of the Year honors. While setting new Biola Soccer records for minutes played and matches started this season, the Salem, Oregon-native maintained a 3.75 GPA as a nursing major at Biola to qualify her for nomination.

Having Chavez and Martin selected to the Scholar All-Region Teams alongside Brown gives the 2019 backline a strong case for the most decorated single-season by any defensive unit in program history: this year's group has three Scholar All-Region selections and four all-conference awards with freshman Madi Reeves landing on the All-PacWest Third Team.

Chavez was named to the All-PacWest First Team after playing every minute of the 2019 season and setting the tone for a defense that surrendered the fewest goals in the conference (12). Martin led the Eagles in points with 10 and was top-five in the PacWest in assists with six to earn her third-straight all-conference selection as an Eagle and first Second Team selection.

Both women also carried their team's tradition of academic success: Chavez earned a 3.35 GPA while carrying the maximum 18 units this Fall as a kinesiology major and Martin earned a 3.76 GPA while taking upper-division business administration classes.

Oakes posted an incredibly impressive 3.97 GPA in her human biology major and earned All-PacWest Second Team honors in 2019 with her great work as a holding midfielder. She played in every minute of 14 matches as a senior and rose to fourth in program history for minutes played (5,692) while starting the final 55 matches of her career.

The members of Biola Women's Soccer will complete their final exams this week before eventually returning to Al Barbour Field in the new year for spring practices.
