Concordia Mounts Strong Response

Concordia takes a quick lead and wins the match after Sarah Yang gives Biola the lead in the 75th minute.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles lost a physical, back-and-forth battle with Concordia University Irvine on Thursday, coming up on the short end of a scoring flurry late in the second half.

The Eagles showed that they were ready to equal Concordia's pace and physicality from the opening whistle, preventing the home team from any production in the attack until the 15th minute when CUI got a corner. With Biola doing a great job of keeping opposing attackers with their back toward goal, it took Concordia another 15 minutes to get its first shot of the match and it turned out neither team could find a goal before the teams headed into the halftime break.

It was actually the teams' drive to win the ball and the referee's whistle that would be the lasting marks of the first half. Biola and Concordia combined for five shots but 19 fouls over the first 45 minutes.

But the Eagles made good adjustments to the way the match was being called and still managed to play strong defense in the second half. Concordia surged upfield multiple times while the match was still scoreless, but someone from BU's backline was there to poke the ball away and clear it every time.

Consequently, Biola was the team that generated the most action in the attacking zone and was first to find a crucial through-ball to score.

The visiting Eagles put three corner kicks on the scoreboard before Concordia was able to get its first of the second half. And although CUI registered three shots in the aftermath of that corner, Biola defenders blocked two of them and watched the third go wide in the 66th minute.

BU took the 1-0 lead nine minutes later, with Halie Jamir shaking off pressure to deliver a nice ball into the box for Sarah Yang. Yang then blasted it past Kaylen Whitcomb on her first touch to score her fourth goal of the season and put Biola in a position to hold the lead for the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Unfortunately, two quick goals from Concordia freshman Jadenn Carrillo gave her team an equalizer and the lead in the five minutes after Yang's goal. Carrillo netted an impressive turnaround shot to the upper-90 in the 77th minute and scored again two minutes later after she ran onto the end of a forward pass.

Biola will look to get back in the win column when it returns to Al Barbour Field for its next match. The Eagles will defend their six-match win streak at home against Point Loma on November 13 at 4 p.m. and will celebrate their seniors before the match.
