Early Lead Overcome

Host Azusa Pacific gets two goals in a strong second half to take 10 Cornerstone Cup points from Biola Women’s Soccer.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The third installment of the Cornerstone Cup rivalry between Biola Women's Soccer and Azusa Pacific definitely had the thrill and excitement of any match the teams had play in recent memory. The match was still up in the air until the closing moments, but two second half goals from the host Cougars stood up to earn 10 Cornerstone Cup points and to hand Biola its first loss of the season against a PacWest opponent.

After Biola was included among the "receiving votes" teams in the ninth installment of the National Poll earlier in the day, the Eagles played with good urgency to open up the match, recording a corner kick and a scoring chance from Sandy Hawryla in the first five minutes.

About thirty minutes later, Madyson Brown almost scored the first goal of the match from within the penalty area as the senior centerback got a strong header on a free kick form Colie Martin. Brown's shot forced the Azusa Pacific keeper to make an acrobatic diving save to her right in the effort to keep her team in a scoreless match.

But the score would not stay that way for long after Katelyn Penner scored in the 43rd, just four minutes after Biola's free kick combination. Penner displayed almost every skill that makes her an elite midfielder to score her fourth goal of the season, dispossessing the ball on a slow pass from the Cougars before shaking off two challengers and beating the keeper from 15 yards out with her left foot.

Penner's only shot of the match resulted in her fourth goal in Biola's last six matches and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead headed into the halftime break.

The Cougars did an excellent job responding to the deficit and deserve credit for their strong and fast play in the second half. APU equalized the match with a forward through ball just eight minutes after the restart and then had a midfielder step up to a loose ball that resulted in the Cougars' second goal with just under eight minutes left in regulation.

But the Eagles chance to rebound with a big win of their own will come very soon. Biola will head to Concordia on Thursday for a 12 noon match that will be the first domino in a pivotal six-day stretch of soccer that will decide the PacWest regular season champion between Biola, Concordia and Point Loma.
