LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola volleyball will conclude its 2019 season with three
PacWest matchups at Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles have beaten all three of these teams earlier in the season, the highlight of which was an impressive 3-1 victory on the road at Point Loma. They will look to repeat their earlier successes with three more victories at home against Point Loma, Dominican, and Notre Dame de Namur.

Biola wins 3-1
The Eagles begin their final week of the season with a home matchup on Wednesday against rival Point Loma. Despite the Sea Lions having more success this season in the PacWest, Biola stunned PLNU on the road with a 3-1 win at the beginning of October. In order to defeat Point Loma again, the Eagles will have to slow down an efficient attacking team led by junior middle blocker Madie Fox. Fox leads the team with 301 kills this season and the Sea Lions sit at 14-6 in the conference, pushing for a chance to make the playoff field at third-place in the PacWest. It has been an up and down year for Point Loma as they picked up an incredible sweep against Azusa Pacific, the conference champions, but then lost all three games to the Hawaii schools on the road right after. Those losses in Hawaii came before the Sea Lions came home to win two of three against the Hawaii schools in their home matchups last week. When things are clicking for the Sea Lions they are a dangerous team that can beat anyone. The Eagles enter their second match of the season against PLNU with an all-time record of 44-33 against the Sea Lions. This game will serve as the Eagles' last big rivalry game of the year, and they will surely look to pick up the hard-earned season sweep of Point Loma.

Biola wins 3-1
On Friday, the Eagles host the Dominican Penguins in a matchup they are expected to win. Dominican has struggled to find wins all season long, with Biola taking a 3-1 win in San Rafael earlier this year. The Penguins are led by junior outside hitter Catherine Johnson who has tallied 173 kills this year. The Eagles will look to extend their win streak against the Penguins to five matches as Biola holds a 4-0 record all-time against Dominican. The teams' first meeting came when Biola first joined the PacWest Conference in 2017. Biola hit .304 with 56 kills in its win at Dominican earlier this season. Sabrina Winslow and Raegan Tjepkema were the cornerstones of the Eagles' offense with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively. Biola managed to hold DUC's leading hitter, Johnson, to just one kill with seven errors on 20 swings (-.300).

Biola wins 3-0
The Eagles close their season on Saturday against the Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts. Biola took home a sweep when they played the Argos on the road a little under a month ago, and they expect a similar result on Saturday. The Argos have had a tough year in the PacWest, but are looking to close their season on a positive note with a win in Chase Gymnasium. Junior outside hitter Samantha Shaffer leads NDNU with a total of 229 kills this season. Biola has posted a perfect record of 14-0 all-time against the Argonauts, and they will look to end the season on a positive note with one last victory at Chase Gymnasium. If the Eagles can manage to win all three matches at home this week they'd end the year with seven home victories. It would be the lowest home total in quite some time, in part due to fewer home match opportunities, but it would still be more than the lowest home win total since the turn of the century, which was six back in 2005 (6-5). The lowest home win total for Biola was four in 1972 (4-2) and 1994 (4-3). Bekah Roth (14) and Madison Beebe (9) led the charge for the Eagles the last time out vs. the Argos. The Eagles attack carried them that day, recording 49 kills on a .314 clip while holding NDNU to just 18 total kills in the three-setter. Shaffer was the only Argo to have a good day that day, recording seven kills on 33 attacks.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: Biola won one and had two heartbreakers last week as it hosted the Hawaii schools that began the week in a three-way tie for second-place in the PacWest Conference. The Eagles went up on Hawaii Hilo 2-1 before falling in five to the Vulcans. Hawaii Hilo had the best week of all the Hawaii schools to sit alone in second place in the conference at the end of the week. Biola earned a quick sweep of Hawaii Pacific in the middle match of the week to set it up with some confidence and momentum before meeting Chaminade in an early morning match on Saturday. Biola won the second set and was right there for the first game, but then fell flat in sets three and four to drop the game against the Silverswords. Biola sweeps the season series vs. HPU and was swept by both UHH and CUH.
MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Raegan Tjepkema has been integral to the Biola offense all season long and had another "breakout" week of sorts last week against the Hawaii schools to tie a school record and ultimately earn PacWest Volleyball Player of the Week. Tjepkema had 38 kills on just 67 swings to help Biola to a win over Hawaii Pacific and two close matches vs. Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade. She tied the school record for single-match hitting percentage when she landed 13 kills on 15 error-free swings (.867) in the win over HPU. She also hit .517 with a season-best 18 kills against Hawaii Hilo early in the week. It's Tjepkema's first Player of the Week honor of the season and Biola's sixth conference weekly honor (player, defender, freshman of the week).
Sami Hover and
Abigail Copeland are the others who've won awards for Biola this season. Tjepkema comes into this final week of the season third on the team with 221 kills, but is first on the squad with a .331 hitting percentage. She also leads the team in service aces with 35 and is second only to Copeland (111) with 94 blocks.
SENIOR WEEK: This week is all about honoring Biola's group of seniors, which includes Sabrina Winlsow,
Kaitlin O'Brien,
Savannah Hilde and
Becca Branch. All four will be celebrated at a postgame senior day celebration on Saturday after the Eagles host Notre Dame de Namur to close out the season. O'Brien played 2016-19 for Biola, Winslow and Hilde played 2017-19 and
Becca Branch played her freshman year of 2015 before returning this year to close out her career as an Eagle. The group has a combined 1,264 kills, 226 service aces, 1,982 digs and 218 blocks during their Biola careers in 320 combined match appearances.
