Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Spectacular Home Sendoff

Biola Men’s Soccer came back from two goals down in the second half to shock Point Loma with a golden goal from senior captain Alejandro Pelayo.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Wednesday's Senior Night Celebration for Biola Men's Soccer was a whirlwind of emotion that ended in elation for Head Coach Todd Elkins' team. The Eagles did whatever they could to fight their way back into the match against visiting Point Loma and came back from two goals down in the second half to eventually with the contest in overtime with a goal from senior captain Alejandro Pelayo.

The victory exacts a bit of revenge for Biola Men's Soccer, given that the Eagles were 0-3-1 over the last four meetings with Point Loma and had lost 1-0 in San Diego to open the 2019 season. A large contingent of the team probably also remembers BUMS senior night two years ago when the Sea Lions came to Al Barbour Field and stole a victory themselves with a golden goal in overtime.

Appropriately enough, the Eagles basically turned the tables on that match, coming back from a deficit in the second half and scoring a golden goal in overtime on Wednesday as the Sea Lions did in 2017.

The first six minutes, six seconds of the match ended up being a microcosm of the Eagles' play for the following 90. Point Loma worked down the right sideline to score the first goal of the match six minutes in. But Jonathan Serrano struck back just 26 second later to even the score at 1-1 after he stole the ball from a defender above the box and beat the keeper after two touches.

David Archaerandio carried the visiting team to a 3-1 lead by scoring the next two goals for the Sea Lions, first on a penalty kick in the 31st minute and second on a very athletic turnaround shot from outside the 18-yard box in the 65th minute.

Credit to the Eagles for responding to the two-goal second-half deficit by just digging deeper. Biola created two corner kick opportunities in the 10 minutes directly after the goal and then cut the gap in half with a goal from Oscar Rubalcava that was assisted by Leo Thompson and Hunter Finnegan.

The tenor of the match certainly changed with Rubalcava's goal and that was only taken to the next level when a Point Loma student-athlete was ejected with a direct red card in the 83rd minutes. The Eagles equalized the match just 30 seconds after they got a man-advantage, with Rubalcava looping the ball across the penalty area for Jack Kilgallon to collect and lob over the keeper's head and inside the right post.

After that goal it probably should have been obvious that the Eagles were on their way to a great win. Biola Men's Soccer came into the match with a perfect 6-0 record in its NCAA Era when it scores three goals or more. And the seventh win was the sweetest of the set because the golden goal involved two seniors who have been crucial to Biola's success as an NCAA program.

Biola produced its third corner kick of extra time in the 97th minute with a run from Leo Thompson that ended when he kicked the ball off the defender and over the endline. Thompson then lined up at the far-right post for the corner and headed the Alex Lugo service back in front of the net for captain Alejandro Pelayo to put away for his first goal of the season.

After savoring this wonderful finish to the home schedule, the Eagles will travel to Fresno for their final regular season match. They'll play the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds at 7:30 p.m.
