Overtime Still Stings

Point Loma ties it late and scores the golden goal four minutes into overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles' Senior Night had a number of happy moments and even provided a connection from senior captains Riley Waldeck and Jarrett Pugh that gave the home team a late lead. But the night did not end the way Biola would have wanted, as a golden goal from Tim Siegfried gave the visitors a victory in overtime.

Point Loma Nazarene University improves to 9-0-2 in PacWest play after the impressive comeback while Biola stands pat with 16 points in conference at 5-5-1.

The Eagles got off to a fast start thanks to a goal from Jack Cybulski 15 minutes in. The freshman's second goal of conference play came on a beautiful two-touch that helped Cybulski about-face at the top-right corner of the 18-yard box and find the back of the net.

The Sea Lions' response attempt was limited to just three shots before halftime. But their third shot of the second half brought the match even on a laser from midfielder Eddie Gallardo that rushed in from 25 yards out.

Having been in this position five days before, the Eagles knew they were capable of responding to an equalizer and regaining a late lead.

It turned out that the Eagles' captains would lead the home team in accomplishing that goal. After a Kousei Mattox cornerkick was initially neutralized, Riley Waldeck recycled the opportunity by sending the ball toward the center of the box. Jarrett Pugh got his head on the end of the ball to launch it over the keeper and into the net on one bounce.

The goal looked like it would wrap up Senior Night quite nicely. But a goal from the Sea Lions on a set piece with 47 seconds left sent the match into overtime. PLNU scored the game-winner on a pass from Gallardo that threaded through the backline and led the run of Tim Siegfried. Siegfried beat the keeper one-on-one to the right post to give the Sea Lions their fourth comeback victory of the season.

With Biola's home schedule now complete, the Eagles head on the road for the final two matches of their PacWest schedule. Their first matchup in their trip to Northern California is against Academy of Art, with the opening whistle scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
