Another Comeback Win

Biola Men’s Soccer comes back from another deficit to defeat Fresno Pacific 2-1 on the road.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer concluded its regular season with another come-from behind victory on Saturday at Fresno Pacific. After conceding a goal in the 58th minute, the Eagles evened the score just 27 seconds later on a combination from seniors Axel Van Cleve and Leo Thompson and then followed up with a game-winner from Alex Lugo in the 84th minute.

The come-from-behind victory is the second in a row for the Eagles and places them squarely in the upper half of the PacWest table at the conclusion of the regular season. Biola finishes seven points ahead of seventh-place Fresno Pacific and just two points behind third-place Point Loma, who the Eagles just beat three nights ago. In fact, four of Biola's win this season came against four of the five teams that finished ahead of them in the PacWest standings.

Thompson's quick-response goal was huge for the Eagles in stemming the Sunbirds' senior night momentum and was a positive conclusion to the senior campaign for the English striker. The goal was Thompson's fifth of the season and his first since October 19, when Biola defeated Notre Dame de Namur 2-0.

He finishes the season with a team-high 13 points after leading the team with five shots on Saturday.

Outside of the brief blip that resulted in the Fresno Pacific goal in the second half, JD Gunn and the Eagles did a great job playing up to a physical Sunbirds side. The Eagles had four more shots on goal than the home team and played smart in the second half as they search for a goal to give them the lead: Biola had six fouls to FPU's 10 in the final 45 minutes.

With all the success the senior class has had over their final two matches, BUMS got a flash of the future in Lugo's game-winner. Fellow freshman Jack Kilgallon served in a cross for Alex Lugo to run onto for the go-ahead goal with five minutes left. It was Lugo's second goal of the season while Kilgallon finished the season with a freshman-best seven points (two goals, three assists).

Biola Men's Soccer finished at or above .500 for the ninth-straight season with its record of 8-7-3, 6-3-2 PacWest. The Eagles are one of three PacWest teams to finish the regular season on winning streak and also ended the year with three-straight wins at Al Barbour Field.
