A Perfect October

Biola Women’s Soccer defeats Chaminade 2-0 and completes the month of October with a perfect 8-0 record.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Soccer won every match it played in the month of October after the Eagles took care of three more points in a home fixture with Chaminade. A Biola freshman scored a goal in each half for the Eagles while Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group was dominant in its attacking push during the 2-0 victory.

Biola keeps pace with the other two undefeated teams in the conference, Point Loma and Concordia, who also won on Thursday. The Eagles move to 10-3-1 (7-0 PacWest) with the win, marking the fifth time in the last six years that Biola Women's Soccer has recorded its 10th win before the start of November.

It took some time for both teams to get up to game-speed and start combining for passes upfield. But the Silverswords couldn't keep up when the Eagles finally peaked: Biola produced 12 corner kicks in the match, six in each half, to Chaminade's one and 21 shots to the 'Swords six.

Even with all the set pieces Biola has created lately, both of Thursday's goals followed the recent custom of coming in the pace of play around the penalty area. Eleven minutes after Halie Jamir subbed into the match for starter Brynne Anderson, the freshman found a ton of open space at the top of the 18-yard area and turned a Sandy Hawryla pass into the game's first goal.

After Hawryla's pass from the left side moved uninterrupted back toward the middle of the box, Jamir had all the time in the world to size up the shot and line it to the upper-90 for her third goal of the year.

Chaminade's Randi Fontes would force Christina Rodriguez to make a save in the meantime before the break. But the Eagles took their 1-0 lead to halftime and struck quickly again once played resumed.

A little over four minutes into the start of the second half, Mason Stansberry took the first official shot of the period as she cleaned up a loose ball created by Paula-Marie Labate's great work to beat the defense. Labate worked her way to the center of the box after receiving the ball with the goal over her right shoulder and saw her shot scoot away from the diving keeper and toward Stansberry, who was unchallenged as she put the ball away with her right foot.

It was the first goal of Stansberry's collegiate career.

Briana Ruelas made two saves for Biola in the second half after she took over for Rodriguez. But Chaminade wouldn't take any shots on goal over the final 20 minutes of the match because of the hard work of Biola's backline.

The line score of senior centerback Madyson Brown is testament to the defenders' hard work throughout the match. Brown led the Eagles with six shots and four shots on goal during the contest, equaling the 'Swords offensive output all by herself.

The Eagles will play their next two PacWest matches on the road next week. Biola gets the weekend off but heads to Azusa on Tuesday for a Cornerstone Cup battle with Azusa Pacific beginning at 5 p.m.
