Rodriguez Sets Biola Soccer Record

Biola’s 2-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific gives Christina Rodriguez the most career shutouts in Biola history with 28 clean sheets.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was just three Saturday's ago that Christina Rodriguez set a program record for career shutouts with 25. But with Monday's shutout of Hawaii Pacific, Rodriguez became the all-time clean sheets leader for any goalkeeper, male or female, to put on a Biola uniform.

Rodriguez passes Aaron Fenlason from Biola Men's Soccer, a program that dates back to the 1960's, with 28 career shutouts after the Eagles scored a goal in each half and boxed up the Sharks to earn their eighth-straight victory.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group got on the offensive early and jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Hawaii Pacific could even send their first test of Rodriguez. Forward Sandy Hawryla took three shots, including two on goal, in a two and a half minute span to add some sharpness to the attack. Then sophomore Katelyn Penner stepped up yet again to score her third goal in the last four matches.

After the Eagles sent the ball into the box, Penner took a quick shot that was blocked and immediately gathered the loose ball to right-foot it inside the near post and past the keeper. Those two shots in succession would be Penner's only shots of the match, but they resulted in her third game-winner over the past four matches once Rodriguez and the backline completed all 90 minutes.

The Sharks came out of halftime took two shots from distance over the first 15 minutes as they tried to challenge Rodriguez. But HPU wasn't able to build on those attempts because Biola's defensive front limited the visiting side to two errant shots over the final 30 minutes. Rodriguez would end the match with four saves, two in each half, as the Eagles held 65 percent of the possession in the contest.

Christine Goodman put the match nearly to bed in the 73rd minute when she connected with Colie Martin on a run down the right sideline to make it 2-0 Biola. After Martin raced past the challenging defender and into the attacking zone, Goodman pushed the ball past the charging keeper on her first touch to score the first goal of her collegiate career. Goodman's goal makes her the seventh Eagle to score a goal this season and gives Biola Women's Soccer a 44-0-3 record since November 1, 2014 when the Eagles score two or more goals.

Biola will have two days to prepare for its next match. The Chaminade Silverswords will come to Al Barbour Field on Thursday at 4 p.m.
