Vulcans Put In A Corner

Biola Women’s Soccer creates 11 corner kick opportunities and gets a goal early in the second half to defeat Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Soccer earned its fifth win in PacWest play at Al Barbour Field on Saturday, controlling the pace of play as the Eagles have so many times this season to defeat Hawaii Hilo 1-0.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group posted its eighth shutout of the season and maintained 61 percent of possession during the match. But the most impressive part of the final box score was the Eagles' 11 corner kicks and nine shots on goal compared to the Vulcans' zero corners and one shot on target.

Biola Women's Soccer already came into Saturday's match with an impressive differential in corner kicks and now has a total of 31 corners in five conference matches while giving up just two over the same span. The Eagles plus-8 differential in shots on goal also ties their best mark in PacWest play, equalling their shots on goal advantage against Holy Names and Academy of Art.

It turned out that corner kick number six was the service that resulted in the only goal of the match for either side. Just two minutes after the start of the second half, senior Colie Martin launched the ball toward the far left post, where Annmarie Alvarez pushed it back toward the mouth of goal. Midfielder Katelyn Penner reacted quickly and left-footed the ball past goalkeeper Bailey Cahill to send her leaping into the air and celebrating with her teammates.

The goal was Penner's second of the season and her second game-winner in the last three matches.

The Eagles would take nine more shots and five more corners in the 42 minutes after Penner gave them the lead. That production is a testament to Biola's work to keep the ball in its attacking half, which consequently limited Hilo to just two errant shots in the second half and left the Vulcans without a shot at the net over the final hour of the match.

With her one save at the 30-minute mark and her work to serve as an outlet when the backline needed to pass to her, Christina Rodriguez recorded the 27th shutout of her Biola career and her sixth of the 2019 season. Rodriguez is now tied with men's goalkeeper Aaron Fenlason for most shutouts recorded by student-athlete to wear a Biola uniform. Fenlason had 27 clean sheets for Biola Men's Soccer from 2008 to 2011.

Biola only has one day between Saturday and its next match. The Eagles host Hawaii Pacific, who lost 5-2 at Azusa Pacific on Saturday, at 4 p.m. on October 28.
