Sharp Start to PacWest Play

Biola Women’s Soccer starts conference play with a dominant 3-0 road win over Holy Names.

HAYWARD, Calif. --- Biola Women's Soccer showed no signs of rust on Thursday, despite having a full week since the Eagles' last match. Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team dictated the pace of play from the start and had its highest scoring output of the season in a 3-0 win over Holy Names at Pioneer Soccer Stadium.

Biola starts its PacWest schedule with a 1-0 record after the win and has posted three-straight road wins to go along with five-consecutive shutouts. Holy Names fall to 0-9-1 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

It only takes a glance at the traditional box score to see that the Eagles were in a controlling position all match. Biola took a total of 20 shots, 10 in each half, compared to Holy Names' four and held 59 percent of the possession in the match. Seniors Annmarie Alvarez and Colie Martin actually both outshot the home team all by themselves. Alvarez led all players with seven attempts and four shots on goal while Martin had four shots of her own with three on goal.

Martin's second shot on goal is what got the Eagles on the board in the 37th minute. Her teammates found her in space at the midpoint of the attacking half and setup Martin to drill the ball after two touches to beat the keeper to the right upper-90. Martin has now contributed points to each of Biola's last four wins after scoring in this match and assisting in the previous three victories. She leads the team in both categories with two goals and three assists.

The Eagles defense never seemed in trouble of losing that lead during the second half, but things definitely felt much easier once the second goal came in the 77th minute. Senior Paula-Marie Labate served a low cross on a cornerkick that carried to the far right post and toward the vicinity of Madi deMetropolis. It appeared deMetropolis got a leg on the ball before it crossed the goal line, but the center referee ruled it an own goal.

Twelve minutes later, Halie Jamir scored her second goal in as many matches with a header that made it a three-goal match with 90 seconds left in regulation. Madyson Brown's short ball from just outside the box was perfectly placed to find Jamir in a scoring position. It was the icing on top of the match for the senior centerback who helped limit the Hawks to a single shot on goal in each half and no scoring chances in the final 35 minutes.

Biola is now 4-0 all-time against Holy Names without having surrendered a goal in those meetings. The multi-goal scoring effort also extends the women's soccer program's undefeated streak in matches where the Eagles score two or more goals. Biola in now 41-0-3 when scoring two or more goals in contests since November 1, 2015.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround to build on this victory. Biola travels to San Rafael Saturday to take on Dominican at 12 noon.
