Eagles Rally For Another Victory

Notre Dame de Namur tied it in the second half, but an Annmarie Alvarez goal in the 78th minute won it for Biola.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Saturday's match at Al Barbour Field contained a bit more drama than Biola Women's Soccer fans had seen in recent contests. But the Eagles were up to the task of responding to a second half equalizer from Notre Dame de Namur and earned their sixth-straight victory by a score of 2-1.

Biola bring itself within a point of first-place Point Loma in the PacWest table and now has a 4-0 PacWest record. Notre Dame de Namur drops to 4-6-2, 1-4 PacWest, and carries a three-match losing streak to the Eagles after the loss.

The first 10 minutes of the match were marked by a number of offside flags for Erin Brunelle's group because the visiting Argos leaned heavily into a trap defense. But it only took a few more passes over the top for the Eagles to adjust, as Paula-Marie Labate served a great ball upfield in the 16th minute that Sarah Yang chased down, touched past the keeper and pushed across the goaline to give her team a 1-0 lead.

Yang has been an incredibly effective target for the Eagles, especially since she scored the game-winner at Point Loma on September 28. She has scored in every-other match since that contest and has recorded two shots on goal against the last three PacWest opponents while taking 10 attempts.

The Eagles continued to press with seven shots over the duration of the first half compared to the Argos' three. Christine Goodman and Katelyn Penner both launched unchallenged shots that would have been troublesome for NDNU keeper Alexis Aguilar. But each woman's shot missed the frame and left the score at 1-0 headed into halftime.

Argos midfielder Zinnet Siddiqi recorded the equalizer for the visitors in the 58th minute on a penalty kick. And it seemed Notre Dame de Namur had taken the momentum away from the Eagles for the 15 minutes that followed, as NDNU took five more shots in that span and forced Christina Rodriguez to make two saves.

But Biola responded strongly after that flurry, settling possession of the ball with the backline in the 77th minute before working it back to an open Labate in the attacking half. After Yang made a run down the right sideline, she found an outlet in her fellow senior, who took the pass and served a curving ball into the far post. Annmarie Alvarez then met the ball in the air and headed in past the opposing keeper to give Biola its lead again with 12:30 left.

Notre Dame de Namur wouldn't produce any more shots over the final 12-plus minutes because of Biola's ability to clear the ball from the midfield. The Eagles will now look to keep their win streak alive after a week of rest, as Biola's next match will be played Saturday October 26 against Hawaii Hilo.

The Eagles will host the Vulcans at Al Barbour Field at 4 p.m.
