Three-Set Thriller

Biola has to work extra hard to get it done in set three, but the Eagles manage a sweep.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Another day, another sweep for Biola Volleyball! The Eagles played good hosts to their NorCal opponents this week, making sure today's opponent wouldn't miss its flight home with another quick 3-0 (25-10; 25-11; 26-24) win.

"The last two games have been kind of a 180 from the rest of our season," said junior Bekah Roth. "We've been really focusing on pumping each other up instead of internalizing our mistakes and I think that it's definitely showing on the court."

The Hawks made it interesting in the third game, pushing the Eagles all the way to the brink before BU clinched the match in extra points. The Eagles looked as if they were on their way to another massive victory in the third, starting out with an 8-2 advantage and holding at least a four- to five-point advantage as late as 19-14.

At that point, HNU found new life and got Biola stuck in rotation for seven points in a row to take a surprise 21-19 lead. Three of those seven HNU points came on unforced attack errors from BU that landed just outside the box.

A Bekah Roth kill finally broke the Hawks' run to make it 21-20, but then teams traded points until the Hawks led 23-21 and had everyone thinking of a fourth set.

Finally, Madison Beebe slammed one home to start a stretch of three-straight from BU that set up a match point at 24-23. A double touch tied things at 24, but back-to-back errors from Holy Names ultimately helped Biola convert its second chance at match point.

"It was good to see us battle. We gave up a huge lead, but hung in there enough and got the win," said Seltzer.

For the second day in a row Roth was absolutely lights out from the right side. The junior opposite ended with a team-high 11 kills and hit .400. This weekend the junior had 24 kills and hit at least .400 in both wins.

"I think Bekah had a great week," said Seltzer. "She played very well this weekend. She was good!"

Also for the second day in a row, Raegan Tjepkema was incredible from the service line. The freshman tied her season-high (set last night) with five aces, helping Biola to nine aces for the day. BU was great there with just one service error on the day. Sam Hover also had multiple aces, ending with two to go along her team-high 17 digs.

The Eagles' offense was not as dominant as last night, thanks to a solid showing by Holy Names' defenders. The Hawks managed 41 digs to make BU work a little extra hard for their points. Biola hit .242 for the match.

It wasn't Biola's best blocking effort either, leading to some long rallies. Most of the time the Eagles' offense being more efficient than that of HNU meant those rallies ultimately would go in favor of BU. Biola had just four blocks in the match.

Sabrina Winslow (6), Abby Brewster (5) and Tjepkema (4) were the other heavy hitters for BU on the afternoon. Tjepkema led the team with a .444 percentage.

"It feels really good to get a couple wins this weekend and I think this energy will carry over to our NorCal trip next weekend," said Roth.

The win makes Biola 10-9 on the year with a 7-4 PacWest Conference mark. Holy Names falls to 2-15 overall. Next up Biola embarks on its last road trip of the season, playing its final three road games starting next week in NorCal.
