Women’s Soccer Overpowers Domincan

Biola Women’s Soccer moves to 2-0 in PacWest play with a strong 1-0 shutout of Dominican.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- If you wanted to know how strong the Biola women's soccer team is, Saturday's match against Dominican is all the evidence you needed.

The Eagles dominated possession and limited the host Penguins to a single shot on goal. The pressure was so good that outside backs Colie Martin and Madi Reeves spent the majority of the second period in the attacking half of the pitch. And forward Madi deMetropolis suffered a blow around her right eye in the second half and still came back to play, looking like a determined fighter.

By the time the teams had settled into the second half, it was only a matter of when Biola would finally manage to score against Dominican keeper Alyssa Ramos. That breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute with a crisp passing combination along the right sideline that setup Sarah Yang for a punch-in goal. Biola won the match 1-0 as a result and continued the impressive run its been on for the past four weeks.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 in conference play with the victory, their fourth-straight road win and sixth-consecutive shutout. As a result, goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez set a new program record for career shutouts with 25 in her career between the pipes for Biola. Rodriguez passed Hillary Dunham (2002-06) for the women's record and now has the all-time Biola soccer mark in her sights. Men's keeper Aaron Fenlason (2008-11) had 27 clean sheets in his time with the Eagles.

The shot breakdown in the first half of Saturday's match was relatively even, with Biola taking eight shots to Domincan's six. But all the other markers showed the Eagles had the upper hand: BU had 58 percent of the possession while producing six corner kicks to Dominican's zero.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group raised the possession percentage to 61 by the end of the match and didn't need Rodriguez to make a single save in the second period en route to the shutout. The Eagles took four shots on goal in each period and finally found the opening for a through ball to Yang when Madyson Brown settled the ball at her feet in the 78th minute and moved the ball toward the right side of the penalty area.

Brown pushed the ball with the outside of her right foot to rightback Madi Reeves, who dribbled it to the end line and crossed it back in toward the center of the box. Katelyn Penner than pushed it onto Yang and out of the reach of the Dominican keeper to finally put the eagles in position for the three points they were after.

The Eagles will head back home to Al Barbour Field for their next five PacWest matches. Up first is a meeting with Academy of Art on Thursday October 19 at 4 p.m.
