Forward Thinking Defeats ART U

Biola Women’s Basketball got major production from its forwards and scored 50 second-half points to defeat Academy of Art, 82-55.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball pulled away from Academy of Art in the second half of Monday's PacWest matchup in Oakland, scoring 50 second-half points to earn their fifth conference win of the season, 82-55.

Eight women scored six points or more for Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group, but it was a group of forward who led the charge for the Eagles from start to finish. Danita Estorga, Mikayla Greens and Jessica Shill all took turns as Biola's leading scorer on Monday and finished with double-figure point totals as the Eagles dropped 44 points in the paint.

The win brings Biola back to .500 at 7-7 and moves them a half-game ahead of Point Loma for fifth place in conference at 5-3. Academy of Art drops to 2-9, 1-7 PacWest after the Eagles tied their highest point total in conference games with 82.

The two teams played the first half very close as Academy of Art made up the five field-goal advantage Biola had in the first 20 minutes with nine made free-throws. Jazz Benn and Shill both scored four points in the opening period for Biola as the Eagles took a slim 15-14 lead into the second quarter. But then Shill and Danita Estorga made sure that a good start to the second quarter by the Urban Knights would not create any distance.

Estorga made three-straight field goals after ARTU took a five-point lead with four minutes to go in the first half to take the lead right back for Head Coach Alan Nakmura's team. A three-pointer from Brenna Khaw in the closing seconds of the quarter gave the Eagles a 32-30 lead headed into the fifteen minute break as Estorga (10 points) and Shill (eight) accounted for over half of their team's scoring.

The rest of the team woke up in a big way over the final 20 minutes as the Eagles scored 50 points to the Urban Knights' 25 over the third and fourth periods. Shill quickly made a layup and a three-pointer in the first two minutes of the third to push Biola's lead to eight before Jelissa Puckett and Tatum Brimley added threes of their own to give the Eagles as much as a 20-point lead in the quarter.

Biola drained a total of five shots from distance in the period to put it on track for nine makes in 28 attempts on the night. That total marks the first time Biola has made more than five threes in a game since Dec. 8 and contrast the difficulty ARTU had from distance, resulting in a 3-for-16 line from three.

The fourth quarter belong completely to Mikayla Greens who scored 11 of her team-high 17 in the final period on five-of-six shooting.  Greens also led the Eagles in rebounds with eight, helping her team out-rebound an opponent for the sixth time this season. After besting the Urban Knights on the boards 42-to-39, the Eagles are now 6-0 this season when they out-rebound an opponent and average a 22.8-point margin of victory in those games after winning by 27 on Monday.

Greens also set a new best in conference play this year with her 17 points while Shill set a new career-high with her 13.

The Eagles will look to take all the momentum they can from this win into another big PacWest matchup on Thursday. Biola will head to San Rafael to take on the 10-2, 7-1 PacWest Dominican Penguins at 5:30 p.m.
