Penguins Stop Eagles’ Streak

Dominican stopped Biola’s two-game winning streak to start the Bay Area road trip with outstanding shooting.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- The Eagles outrebounded the Dominican Penguins on Thursday night and had two women score 14 points or more on a good shooting night. But the Penguins were firing all cylinders from the get go and shot 50 percent from the field to defeat Biola 87-61.

Jazz Benn recorded her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Danita Estorga came on strong in the second half and added 14 points. But Dominican's 11 three-pointers and two 20-point scorers ended the Eagles' winning streak to beginning the Bay Area road trip at two.

Outside of the first quarter, Biola played a very competitive game against the PacWest's second-place team, playing within six points of the Penguins in the final 30 minutes. But the home team was able to build a big 20-point lead in the first quarter when the Penguins went 7-for-7 seven from three-point range.

The nation's leading scorer, Natalie Diaz, only scored three points in those first 10 minutes and was outscored by Benn 11-to-9 over the first half. Then the Eagles' offense got in rhythm during the second quarter as the Penguins shooting from beyond the arc went cold. Led by Benn's five points and Tatum Brimley's four, seven women scored for Biola in the second quarter and the Eagles went on an 11-to-2 run to close half down 47-28.

Dominican made sure the Eagles wouldn't get in a position to get the upset on the road by adding seven points to its lead going into the final 10 minutes. But the scoreboard did not prevent Danita Estorga from having an excellent second half during which she scored 12 points.

Estorga went 4-of-5 from the field and was perfect on three attempts from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points. The Santa Maria, Calif.-native has found her shooting touch since the start of 2019 and is averaging over 10 points a game during this road trip. Brenna Khaw recorded six points and six rebound while Sara Dougan added five points and seven rebounds.

Biola's bench scored 27 points in the contest, punctuated by Haley Gantt's first points of the New Year when she sank a three-pointer in the closing 30 seconds.

The Eagles will take Friday to recoup before traveling to Oakland to face Holy Names for the final game of the road trip. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
