Late Playmaking Lifts Eagles

Clutch baskets down the stretch and a number of key steals help Biola escape Notre Dame de Namur with a win.

BELMONT, Calif. --- The Eagles delivered what they needed during the big moments of Saturday's 45-42 win over Notre Dame de Namur, stealing a victory in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-3 in PacWest play.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team had to play catch-up late in the game as both teams had trouble scoring through the first 30 minutes of the game. The Eagles went into the halftime break at a four-point deficit after scoring just 24 points in the first half and then added just six points in the third quarter.

But Biola picked up momentum in the game at the end of the third period thanks to Jelissa Puckett's first points of the afternoon with a layup in the closing seconds. The Eagles went into the fourth quarter in striking range as a result of Puckett's make, taking a slim lead midway through the fourth period while the Argos missed their first five shots of the quarter.

Mikayla Greens tied the game for Biola within the first 70 seconds of the quarter and contributed all six of her points in the final 10 minutes. Sara Dougan followed Greens' layup with a clutch three-pointer that gave the Eagles their first lead of the second half while Puckett chipped in two more points and another steal midway through the quarter that helped put her team in the driver's seat.

The steal from Puckett, and a second from Greens shortly after, kept Notre Dame de Namur from getting into its offense and making a field goal until a full two minutes after Dougan gave Biola the lead. By the time Anaya Rodisha made that layup for the Argos, Biola was already up four points with just 3:16 left in the game.

When the dust settled at the end of the game, it was apparent that Biola's philosophy of sharing the offense won out over an Argos team that basically had just two scorers on Saturday. After Jordan Rodriguez' 16 points and Rodisha's 14, the rest of the Argos combined for just 12 points while Biola had nine women appear in the score column. Brenna Khaw led the Eagles with nine points but four of her teammates also chipped in six points or more to help Biola begin their long Northern California trip with a win.

The Eagles' second of four contests on the trip will take them to San Francisco on Monday to match up with Academy of Art. Tip-off with the Urban Knights is scheduled for 5 p.m.
