Cougars Continue Win Streak

Azusa Pacific takes Saturday’s game on their home floor to improve to 12-0 in PacWest play.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The PacWest's first place team didn't flinch one bit in Saturday's meeting with Biola at the Felix Event Center. Two double-figure scorers and another late spark from Aysia Johnson were not enough for the Eagles as the Cougars took the game by a final score of 82-53.

Azusa Pacific scored at least 75 points for the eighth-straight game to win its 12th-consecutive game and start PacWest play a perfect 12-0. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group sits at 8-9 overall but still has a winning record in conference play at 6-5.

Almost from the get-go, Azusa Pacific came up with extended scoring runs that put Biola at a distance. The Eagles took a one-point lead after two and a half minutes on back-to-back buckets from Brenna Khaw and Mikayla Greens. But 14 unanswered points for the Cougars over the next five minutes set APU up for a 22-6 lead after the first quarter.

Jazz Benn would add to her two first-quarter points with a three-pointer and a layup in the second period that would give her a team-high seven points at the break. But 11 points from APU reserve Rachel Bozlee paced the Cougars to their second 20-point quarter of the half and a 42-20 lead at the break.

Azusa Pacific benefitted from 26 points off the bench in the first half to build its lead while Biola would have to wait until the fourth quarter to see its reserves push back and help the Eagles outscore APU in the fourth quarter.

With Johnson's seven points, the Eagles would get 10 points off the bench and 14 points in the paint during the final 10 minutes to close the gap by seven. Greens scored nine of her 13 points during the final period to join Jazz Benn (15) in double-digits.

The Eagles will return to Chase Gym for two home matchups next week. They'll host Westcliff University on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for an exhibition and then return to PacWest action on Saturday for a matchup with Fresno Pacific slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
