Penner Inks Fitting Ending

Freshman Katelyn Penner scores her first goal and it's a game-winner!

SAN FRANCISCO --- Biola Women's Soccer had near-miss after near-miss after near-miss on Thursday afternoon, until finally in the 100th minute, freshman Katelyn Penner scored an unassisted golden goal to help BU best Academy of Art.

The win comes in Biola's first PacWest Conference matchup of the season and pulls the Eagles back to an even .500 mark through their first eight matches.

Biola hands the Urban Knights just their third loss of the year (6-3), while picking up its own third win of the season (3-3-2).

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team was the side with more class throughout the match, dominating possession from start-to-finish and out-shooting the Urban Knights 24-10.

The Eagles had a hard time turning any of those scoring chances into goals as the ART U keeper, Morgan Wirz, managed a season-high eight saves in the contest. Wirz managed four saves in the first half, four in the second to keep BU at bay, but Penner scored on Biola's first shot-on-goal in the overtime period to give the more deserving side the victory.

The freshman midfielder came into possession of the ball in the middle of the field just outside of the 18-yard box. She dribbled a few steps to her left around a defender and took two or three steps forward inside the box before burying a perfect shot in the top left corner to send her teammates and faithful traveling cheering section into a frenzy.

The goal is Penner's first of her Biola career. She becomes the fifth Eagle to score this year and is the first new player with a game-winning goal.

Sarah Jeffries was active throughout her 77 minutes, leading the Eagles with six shots and four shots-on-goal. The junior was unable to find her team-leading fourth goal of the season, but seems to be firing on all cylinders as Biola builds towards action later this week.

It was also a great showing by the defensive unit, as just five days after a game that had a combined six goals in it, Biola managed a clean sheet. For the second-consecutive game, both Viviana Poli and Alyssa Joel saw time in goal.

Biola (3-3-2, 1-0 PacWest) continues its NorCal swing on Saturday as it faces Notre Dame de Namur (1-6, 0-1 PacWest) at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles are 3-1-1 all-time vs. the Argos, including last year's 3-1 victory.
