Eagles Rangel Up A Win

Biola rides a Rangel PK score to a 2-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur.

BELMONT, Calif. --- For the first time this season Biola Women's Soccer has back-to-back victories. The Eagles got goals from Paula-Marie Labate and Sierra Rangel to defeat Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, and remain undefeated in PacWest Conference play.

It was a well-fought contest, with both teams recording double-digit shots and both keepers seven-plus saves. The game-changing moment ended up being a NDNU foul inside the box that sent Rangel to the penalty marker in the 65th minute.

Labate's goal opened the scoring and was the only goal of the first half. The junior scored her first goal of the season and the 10th of her Biola career, when Sarah Jeffries passed the ball to her off a throw-in and she dribbled around a few defenders to put one away.

It was a Sandra Aguilar foul (and yellow card) that ended up giving Rangel the opportunity to extend what was then a 1-0 lead into a 2-0 advantage. The freshman forward buried the shot into the left side of the goal and then Biola began to batten down the hatches and defend against an athletic Argos team.

Biola was able to keep NDNU off the board for a little over 20 more minutes, but a goal from NDNU's Allyssa Valente in the 88th minute made the final three minutes of the match very, very tense.

Vivana Poli stepped up big-time during those final few minutes, making saves in the 89th and 90th minute in order to lock down the 2-1 win. Poli ended the match with nine saves (six in the second half) to help her earn her third win of the season.

Biola improves to 4-3-2 (2-0 PacWest) with the win, while the Argos fall to 1-7 (0-2 PacWest). The Eagles have a major PacWest Conference battle coming up next, when they host Concordia Irvine (3-3-1, 1-0 PacWest) next Saturday.
