Biola Withstands Concordia’s Counters

The Biola Eagles earned a tie with Concordia in spite of 18 shots-on-goal and three goals from the home team.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola's offense came alive during Saturday's non-conference match with Concordia, scoring an early goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute and then producing two late goals in succession to put the Eagles in position to earn a 3-3 tie.

Concordia took an eye-popping 36 shots and 18 shots-on-goal in the match but still found itself behind after 21 minutes because on Viviana Poli's early work in goal and Annmarie Alvarez' opportunistic scoring ability.

Alvarez scored her third goal of the season and first goal since August 30 after Sarah Jeffries crossed the ball to her in the box for Alvarez to finish bottom right.

Both of Biola's keepers ended up making at least seven saves in the contest and Poli made all seven of hers in the first half, but Concordia broke through to score twice in the first half and take a one-goal lead into halftime.

That score would carry well into the second half because Biola replacements like Rachel Melvin and Sierra Miller provided stability and energy that the Eagles eventually channeled into scoring chances. Both Melvin and Miller played at least 70 minutes each after being inserted into play with 15 minutes left before halftime while starters Madi deMetropolis, Devin Gooch and Katelyn Penner all logged over 100 minutes on Saturday.

Sarah Jeffries played 88 minutes herself and was finally able to build on her early assist with two goals late in regulation that were just seven minutes apart. She turned on the jets to get on the end of an Alvarez pass into the box in the 72nd minute to tie the score and then blasted the ball to the top-right corner from outside the 18-yard area to give Biola the lead in the 79th minute.

Concordia took advantage of an intercepted pass in the 85th minute to score a breakaway oal that tied the match, but Alyssa Joel and the backline demonstrated effort and grit in trying to hold onto the lead and then in keeping Biola in the match after Carmany Jones' goal. Joel made three saves after Jeffries' second goal and then four more in the 20 minutes of overtime to help Biola remain on even-footing.

The red birds' best chance to take the match in overtime came with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Annmarie Alvarez took a straight shot at goal while the keeper was on the ground, but the ball took a slice in Concordia's favor and hit the post.

Biola will get to face Concordia again in just two weeks when CUI comes to Al Barbour Field for a contest that actually counts toward each team's PacWest record. In the meantime, the Eagles will travel to Northern California next week to open up their conference schedule with fixtures against Academy of Art on Thursday and Notre Dame De Namur next Saturday.
