Sea Lions Snag a Shutout

Point Loma’s uses pressure on the ball and one decent offensive chance to clip Biola, 1-0.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- By the closing portion of the second half of Wednesday's non-conference match with Point Loma, the Biola Eagles had handled basically everything the Sea Lions had thrown at them.

Viviana Poli was solid again coming out the gates and coming off of NCCAA and PacWest Defender of the Week honors. The freshman keeper made six saves in the first half alone, including back-to-back stuffs on good scoring chances for the visitors in the 34th minute that Poli punched over the bar.

Then the Biola's defense took its turn at checking the Point Loma scoring effort in the second half as the Sea Lions were limited to just one shot in the first 30 minutes of the second period. But even though Point Loma had difficulty making way past the Biola defense, it was still able to play on the front foot because of the constant pressure the Sea Lions applied on the Eagles' possession.

Biola's defenders and midfielders found themselves in cramped space frequently throughout the match and never quite found the forward ball they needed to unleash the Eagles' forward past the visiting defenders. Sarah Jeffries and Kavitha George each had their runs down the sidelines and into space, but the Sea Lions backline that had recorded three-straight shutouts coming into the match would not flinch or surrender a clean look for Jeffries or George.

The Eagles also had a few crosses that caused some danger for Point Loma. Madi deMetropolis continued her strong return to form with multiple shots on the night, but her best may have come in the 20th minute when her header on a Colie Martin cross went just left for a goal kick. Much later in the second half, Sarah Yang got past the defender marking her and on the end of a Jeffries cross on the right end line. But Yang's foot got under the ball and it skied over the corssbar.

Point Loma had scratched together its goal by the time Yang's attempt went high in the 80th minute. Julia Glasner picked up the ball for the Sea Lions at the top of the penalty area and quickly swiveled around to shoot the ball inside the right post for her third goal of the season.

Biola will look to regroup for Saturday's road match at Concordia. Kickoff in the women's match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
